Cats were incredibly popular in ancient Rome; Rome may have been spared from plague outbreaks due to its huge population of feral cats keeping the rat population under control. Today, Rome has the largest number of feral cats of any city in the world�about 300,000 felines! The largest domestic cat ever weighed was about 46 pounds!
