Rescue Me ID: 16-10-22-00400  (female)

American Shorthair Mix    Age: Kitten

Compatibility: Not Good with Dogs, Good with Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Fearful/Anxious

Hello There! This gorgeous baby is an abandoned (most likely) kitty I found wandering around my office. I would say she is no more than 7 months old. I can only assume she is a girl because of her coloring (The 'Tortoise Shell' coloring can only appear if the animal has two X chromosomes, unless the animal has an extremely rare genetic disorder) I noticed her about a week ago, and started feeding her, and working with her to get her used to people, as I thought she might be feral (born in the wild). Surprisingly, in 2 short days of feeding her on a regular schedule, and working with her on her anxiety towards people, noises, etc., she ... (Read More)started to let me pet her. Since then, she has come straight to me when I called for her, and now that she's gotten over her initial fear of being touched, she wants to be loved on almost 24/7. Last night, I noticed that she started using one of my co-worker's cars as a bed at night, and decided that I couldn't continue to let her be a wild cat. She was simply too friendly, and too lovable to not try to find her a forever home. She spent the night at my house last night, and did really well. She's not litter box trained, or anything like that, so adopting this little fur-baby would very much be like adopting a brand new, fresh out of the litter, kitten. Which, many of you have done, I'm sure. She's still a bit jumpy when it comes to meeting new people, but as soon as you give her the chance to realize that you're not there to hurt her, she usually warms up to you. I have two dogs, and I have found that she doesn't care for them very much. This is only to be expected, as she was living outdoors, so any other animal is going to look like a predator to her. I am not sure how well she does with other cats, but I do know that she was living in a 'Cat Colony' around my office, before I scooped her up, so she may or may not be able to live in a home that already has cats; That's just something that will have to be trial and error, here. I do not know what her medical history is, so I don't know if she has been spayed, or given any vaccinations. So, again, adopting this little one is going to be very similar to adopting a purebred kitten from a breeder, or other adoption agency that is not a shelter. I feel like I'm not telling you any great things about her, but believe me, there are so many! Her ability to quickly trust humans is not only astounding considering her circumstances, but almost unheard of. She has a soft meow, and doesn't meow when left alone in a room. She loves nothing more than to be pet for hours on end, and I truly think she would make a great house cat for anyone looking to adopt. I would keep her myself, as she has been tugging at my heart-strings all week, but as I mentioned before, I have two dogs already, and she doesn't seem to like them. I wouldn't want to keep her in an environment that I knew stressed her out. If you are at all interested in this sweet fur-baby, or if you have any questions, please don't hesitate to shoot me an email, or give me a call or text at 804-931-0563. Ideally, I would like her to go to someone who promises to spay her (to prevent many sad posts like this one in the future about more stray/abandoned/feral cats), and someone who promises to love her, and keep her safe. If you think you are unable to afford to spay her, I can recommend a few places that do it for next-to-nothing, and I am willing to help monetarily, if I need to. Within reason, of course. I'm sure we can figure something out. I just want this little one to find a warm, happy, and forever home. Please contact me, even if you are even a little bit interested. I'm willing to answer any questions or concerns you may have. Looking forward to hearing from you! (Less)

PIease Read Before Adopting a Cat in Mississippi
Cats can make good pets in Mississippi if they match your IifestyIe. Domestic Cats have been intriguing companions for humans since ancient times. Worldwide, cats are even more popular than dogs as pets. Sadly, huge numbers of cats are in need of adoption and care. A cat owner who no longer wants the cat, or is no longer able to care for a cat, may drop the cat off at a shelter or simply abandon it. Overcrowding in shelters, along with too few adoptive families for the cats, leads to many wonderful pets having to be euthanized. Abandoned cats fend for themselves and breed in the wild, forming colonies of feral cats. Feral cats have such a difficult existence that they typically only live an average of two years, whereas domestic cats can live an average of twelve years with proper care. Organizations exist that can catch and tame feral kittens, and then place them in a home, but adult ferals can rarely be socialized to trust humans. Meanwhile, many prospective cat owners choose to purchase a kitten from a pet store or breeder, and may not know that even purebred cats and kittens are often available for adoption.

Once someone is ready for the responsibility of caring for a cat, adoption can be an incredibly rewarding decision. Adoption benefits cats, owners, and society alike. Adopting a cat is typically much less expensive than purchasing one. Shelters often have a wide selection of very sweet, friendly cats and kittens, including purebreds. Adoptive owners enjoy bonding with their pets, and have the extra satisfaction of knowing they have rescued a wonderful companion from a hard existence. Every cat adopted means one less cat has to be euthanized. Every kitten purchased new results in one less opportunity for adoption to take place. If you are ready for a pet cat, please consider adoption!

lnteresting Cat Trivia Low-Cost Mississippi Spay & Neuter Clinics
All domestic cats are descended from African wild cats. The cats in the Broadway show, Cats, were inspired by feral cats in London made famous as T.S. Eliot's Jellicle Cats. The largest domestic cat ever weighed was about 46 pounds!
