Meet the one and only Fur Fun Rescue foster cat, Shop Cat. Normally we are only a dog rescue, but sometimes an opportunity to help just presents itself. Shop Cat came to us last December a few days before it was supposed to drop to -30 degrees. A friend of one of our volunteers had posted a picture of this cat that she had kept seeing around her house that was skittish and had drainage from its eyes. She was able to get a couple pictures and that's how we first saw this medium-haired, pure white, bright blue-eyed boy! She finally caught him in a live trap and our volunteer picked him up and brought him to his business' heated warehouse. He ... (Read More)intended to get him out of the cold, get his eyes/nose checked out, nurse him back to health and find him a home. Then he found out really quickly that Shop Cat is literally the most affectionate cat any of us have ever met. He is almost dog-like in the affection he gives and wants! Never hisses or randomly attacks. We had him vetted initially at Anamosa Vet Clinic, we had his neuter done at IHA and they guessed him at 6-7 years old, then I took him back to Anamosa and asked them to test him for FIV/FeLV as I was ready to find him a home and assumed he had been an outdoor cat most of his life. That is when we found out he is FeLV positive. We are having him tested again because sometimes the vaccinations cause a false positive. If he is positive he cannot live with other cats that are negative for FeLV. We will update this once we know the results. He is currently kenneled overnight in a large dog kennel with his litter box, blankets, food and water and roams free at our volunteer's business most of the day when someone is there. The issue is that as the weather gets warmer the warehouse doors will have to be open and they are close to downtown Cedar Rapids. We don't want him to get hit by a car or just wander off. He really is loved by a lot of the staff there, but we know that as spring nears, the best place for him is not going to be in a warehouse. Feel free to share or let us know if you are interested! Please call Travis at 319-431-5956 if you would like to meet Shop Cat or know more about him. (Less)

PIease Read Before Adopting a Cat in Iowa
Cats can make good pets in Iowa if they match your IifestyIe. Domestic Cats have been intriguing companions for humans since ancient times. Worldwide, cats are even more popular than dogs as pets. Sadly, huge numbers of cats are in need of adoption and care. A cat owner who no longer wants the cat, or is no longer able to care for a cat, may drop the cat off at a shelter or simply abandon it. Overcrowding in shelters, along with too few adoptive families for the cats, leads to many wonderful pets having to be euthanized. Abandoned cats fend for themselves and breed in the wild, forming colonies of feral cats. Feral cats have such a difficult existence that they typically only live an average of two years, whereas domestic cats can live an average of twelve years with proper care. Organizations exist that can catch and tame feral kittens, and then place them in a home, but adult ferals can rarely be socialized to trust humans. Meanwhile, many prospective cat owners choose to purchase a kitten from a pet store or breeder, and may not know that even purebred cats and kittens are often available for adoption.

Once someone is ready for the responsibility of caring for a cat, adoption can be an incredibly rewarding decision. Adoption benefits cats, owners, and society alike. Adopting a cat is typically much less expensive than purchasing one. Shelters often have a wide selection of very sweet, friendly cats and kittens, including purebreds. Adoptive owners enjoy bonding with their pets, and have the extra satisfaction of knowing they have rescued a wonderful companion from a hard existence. Every cat adopted means one less cat has to be euthanized. Every kitten purchased new results in one less opportunity for adoption to take place. If you are ready for a pet cat, please consider adoption!
