Checkers is a noble, handsome, gentle, and relaxed, 11-year-old, male ginger tabby looking for a loving guardian. Checkers landed at Chicago Animal Care and Control as a stray earlier this year.     Who's like a sunny day in the middle of the night? Midnight, of course! She's a spunky, active, kittenish 1 year old cat who arrived at ACL as a stray. We were able to locate her owners an amazing 8 months after she initially went missing! Sadly, Midnight's previous owners had given up on ever finding her again, and they had adopted another cat that doesn't get along with other cats. Gambit arrived as a stray, and he has the bearing of a cat who has spent some time outside, lording it over all of creation! His charisma is intense - it's like being near a movie star! Gambit loves people and is eager to interact with anyone and everyone. He's definitely angling to move from outside the house to inside the house for maybe the first time in his life. Domestic Cat    Age: Young Kitten

Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

Named for the War god of Greek Mythology, Ares is a plucky fellow who gets along great with people, cats, and other dogs. He loves his foster dog sisters and will run up to them and greet them with an affectionate leg rub and some purring. He can often be found scampering about the house in what might be perceived as a mischievous fashion, but in actuality he is patrolling the home and keeping it safe from intruders. He likes to follow around his foster brother Handsome, so he can keep learning about how to be a good guard cat. He would do well in a home with lots of places to explore and he would do great in a home with other cats or ... (Read More)dogs, or both. He was born mid-April to a stray momcat. His sister is Phobos. Our adoption fee for kittens under 6 months old is $125 or 2 for $200, which includes them getting fixed, microchipped, tested for FIV and FeLV, and up to date on vaccines. Domestic Cat    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Cats, Good with Adults (Not Kids)
Personality: Average Energy, Submissive
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

Gatsby (about 1 year old as of June, 2017) is a neutered male black with a grey tail longhaired cat. Gatsby was trap neuter-returned as an older kitten that didn't seem tamable back in summer of 2016 but a few months later a woman found him and took him in to rescue him. He had fleas and his initial rescuer gave an 'all natural' over the counter flea remedy and Gatsby started having a terrible reaction. She reached out to us for help and two of our volunteers worked for hours washing the sticky, oily substance off of him as he was very near death. Thankfully unlike many cats who fall victim unregulated store bought flea remedies Gatsby ... (Read More)managed to pull through, although his first few days indoors weren't exactly positive for him and he had trouble adjusting to life in a foster home that had a dog and two small kids. After a few weeks we moved him into a more quiet foster home and he started to come around. He is now okay with being picked up briefly and loves to be petted by the people he trusts, he just isn't very outgoing in new situations and is very sensitive to loud noises or sudden movements. We couldn't recommend him for a home with an excitable dog or young hyper kids but he does great with other cats and anyone who can be calm and patient with him. (Less)

Domestic Cat    Age: Kitten

Bernadine is a gorgeous snugly sweet, yet shy 11-month-old tabby cat looking for a loving guardian. Bernie was found stray in a Chicago backyard and brought to Chicago Animal Care and Control where she gave birth to her kittens. Lucky for the whole family, they were chosen by a foster family. She and her kittens grew up in a loving home with caring people and other cats. Her kittens have all been adopted, and now it's Bernadine's time to be cherished. She is a shy girl at first. But, once she feels safe and comfortable with a person she is fine, relaxed and playful. Since she's accustomed to other cats, we think she'd be happy to share a ...     Alice (about 12 weeks old as of 8/24) is a black female shorthaired kitten. Alice was rescued from the inside of a car engine as a small kitten. This little stowaway had some stowaways of her own though; as one of the few poor kittens we've ever found covered with lice her foster mom just couldn't resist naming her Alice because she was All-Lice!     Snarf (about 3 and a half months old as of 8/16) is a female dark tortieshell shorthaired kitten. Snarf was found with her mom and siblings living under a carport in Waukegan. The kittens were a little on the older side and very wild like their mama, and poor little Snarf took the longest to come around to loving people so she is the only 'ThunderCat' kitten left up for adoption from her litter.     Smidge was born in April 2017 and taken into foster care with his 3 siblings. He has grown from a shy scaredy cat to a handsome little boy that asks for pets and rolls over for belly rubs. He would be a GREAT little brother to an adult cat that wouldn't mind him rubbing up against them or chasing their tail a bit. He has good manners and backs off when told. Domestic Cat    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Cats, Good with Adults (Not Kids)
Personality: High Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

Krispy (about 2-4 years old as of July, 2017) was found as a friendly stray near the Waukegan Popeye's Chicken restaurant living out of their dumpster before moving on to handouts from a nearby caretaker who quickly got him trapped and neutered. They didn't realize he was friendly until after his surgery, hence his little eartip that would have marked him as fixed if he were to go back outside, but in the recovery room he immediately started charming the surgical staff so he went home straight into foster care. He loves people, he will meow to them and wind around legs to get attention. He loves to be pet and scratched but Krispy is a very ... (Read More)playful boy and he will take too much stimulation as an invitation to wrestle. His foster family are working on teaching him to be more gentle, but he may not be the perfect kitty for a family with very small children who won't know any better than to provoke him or with people with bleeding or immune disorders. He still thinks being held is weird after fending for himself on the streets and simply won't tolerate being cradled like a baby, but he loves to smash against people and cuddle on his own terms. He adores playing with other cats and would do best with a young playful kitty companion who won't mind wrestling with him every day. He has already been returned from one potential home where his intended playmate couldn't handle his type of rough a tumble so another really playful confident kitty or kitten is a must. We're not sure yet how he will handle being around dogs but with a cat-friendly dog that would be okay if Krispy wanted to wrestle with them, too, he could give it a try! At Petco Vernon Hills, where his video is taken, he has adopted a 5 mo old male kitten. The play and sleep together. Smidge thinks Uncle Krispy is the coolest. They would ahve fun staying together. She is very healthy, spayed, up-to-date on vaccines, micro-chipped and virus-tested. Domestic Cat    Age: Adult

Compatibility: Good with Adults (Not Kids)
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

Jack is a total tom cat - in the most adorable way possible! This big boy would be happiest in a home with multiple adults to spend time with him and keep him occupied. Jack loves toys, toys, and more toys! Ideally he'd have two scheduled 15-minute play sessions per day in his forever home to stay busy and happy! Jack is a front paw declaw and because his paws are very sensitive to the touch and should be handled delicately, Jack would do best in an adult-only home. To arrange a meet and greet with Jack, email Gabrielle at caninemanager@animalcareleague.org.

Saya was lucky to go to a temporary foster home until she was ready for adoption. Per her foster family, once she has time to warm up, she's very sweet and friendly and adores pets. He was adopted at about 5 months of age but his adopter has fallen on hard times and cannot keep him.     Squeaky (8-10 years old as of January, 2017) is a neutered male black short-haired cat. 'Squeaky' got his name from his very distinct and frequent meow, which is not actually high pitched or squeaky but a deep soulful yowl. Squeaky was found as a friendly adult stray back in 2011 when he was thought to already be a few years old and was taken in as an indoor outdoor cat by his caretaker after going through our trap neuter return program.     Genevieve (about 2 and a half years old as of July, 2016) is a spayed female tortoiseshell shorthaired cat. Genevieve was found outside as a ridiculously friendly and outgoing stray. We can only guess at her age and background, but because she was so petite and still so playful we think she was just under 1 year old when we found her and she's still like a big kitten! We also suspect she was raised from very early on as an only cat because she is so open and loving with all people but so terrible at social interactions with most other cats. Although she has adapted to life in a foster home with lots of other cats she often gets upset just by ... (Read More)the sight of other cats and sometimes throws tantrums around them. When she does try to make friends she just sneaks up on them and tries to play, roughly, like she never learned the right way to go about it from a mother cat and littermates. She even plays a little too rough with people so we wouldn't recommend her for a family with small children, but for the right family that likes to 'razzle' their cat and isn't phased by play bites she'll be tons of fun! If she's not playing she loves to be cradled like a baby and held or carried around for ages- she is a very attention seeking cat and will probably do best as a spoiled only cat or sharing the spotlight with just one or two other young, playful, and hopefully more submissive cats, like her shy foster friend Sunshine. Domestic Cat    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good with Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current, FIV

Hook (about 3 years old as of November, 2016) is a neutered male grey shorthaired cat. Hook started showing up at a feral colony in Waukegan as a scared stray cat back in March of 2016. One day in May he came by to eat with a broken leg bent like a 'Hook' but avoided all efforts to trap him for 5 months. Finally just before the weather turned he was caught and turned out to be very sweet. Unfortunately his bent leg was entirely healed in place and the vet couldn't do anything to straighten it without causing him more pain, so now he just has one weird leg and walks a little funny with a short stride. He is happy to be an indoor cat ... (Read More)again and likes to sit up and beg for treats and be cuddled and petted. He gets along well with cats and kids, but we haven't seen how he handles living with dogs yet so we would recommend only a very calm, respectful dog for him. Hook has tested positive for antibodies to FIV, a slow acting virus that can cause mild to moderate immune impairment. It is contagious to other cats but only through deep bite wounds, something not likely to happen given a slow introduction, so we will be happy to adopt him to an FIV negative cat family as long as they will be cautious and patient integrating him to their home. Most cats with FIV live to be seniors and pass away from common old age conditions, so it doesn't mean he won't have a long, happy life! (Less)

Domestic Cat    Age: Kitten

Personality: High Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Daisy (about 6 1/2 months old as of 10/19/2016) is a female black and white shorthaired kitten. Daisy was born to a feral mother cat who had literally been dumping her kittens at one of our caretakers' house for years. They finally caught her but she was about to give birth, so these lucky kittens have been inside their whole lives. Daisy is a very vocal kitty who likes to meow about things as she goes through her day and will sometimes call out to figure out where people are if she wanders off alone expecting someone to call back to her or come find her. That sounds awfully needy but she is actually the most independent kitty from her ... (Read More)litter. She is sweet and affectionate but doesn't want to cuddle until she is done playing and doesn't feel the need to be on top of someone smothering them every time she gets a few pets. That said, when she is in full cuddle mode she loves serious, firm pets so strong they pull the skin around her eyes back and exaggerate her already naturally silly long skinny face. She is very energetic and alert which can make her seem jumpy or skittish, but it's really just her goofy, playful nature showing. She does well with kids, gets along great with the other cats and kittens in her foster home, and although she hasn't had much dog experience we think she is relaxed enough to live happily with a cat-friendly dog. She has a lot of energy and would do best with a playmate to wear her out like one of her siblings. Daisy's siblings are William, Johnny and Primrose. (Less)

Animal ID: 16-09-06-00162Primrose (female)

Domestic Cat    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Cats, Good with Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Primrose (born 3/30/17) is a spayed, female, black tuxedo, short-haired kitten. Primrose was born to a feral mother cat who had literally been dumping her kittens at one of our caretakers' house for years. They finally caught her but she was about to give birth, so these lucky kittens have been inside their whole lives. Prim looks the most like her mother and takes after her the most too. She was the last kitten to decide people were good despite what her wild mama told her. She has made a big turn around and is now a super well-adjusted, loving little girl. She follows her foster mom around like a lovesick puppy. She likes to quietly bug her ... (Read More)foster family for attention, sitting and staring at them expectantly until they give in and pet her! Primrose purrs over just about anything in the comfort of her foster home and although she doesn't like being held or snuggled for long periods of time, as much as her siblings do, she is super affectionate and loves kisses on her little muzzle. She chirps with delight when she is really excited about something and loves to play. She throws down with her big brothers, William and Johnny, with no reservations. Prim has done well at adoption events with kids but we think in her forever home she'd do better with older children. She gets along great with other cats but hasn't had dog experience, so she'd probably do better with a calm, quiet, older dog that is very respectful of kitties. She has a lot of energy and would do best with a playmate to wear her out like one of her siblings Daisy, William and Johnny. (Less)

Tootie is a lovable, beautiful and playful, six-year-old, 12-pound, Calico cat looking for a loving guardian. Tootie loves people, gets along with most other cats and adores being pet. Domestic Cat    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Cats, Good with Adults (Not Kids)
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current, FIV

Nubs is a shy, loving, talkative and very cat-friendly, three-year-old, golden-eyed male buff tabby cat looking for a loving guardian. This gorgeous cat lets you hold and snuggle him, and loves to be combed and brushed. While he's not much of a lap cat, he will seek out your affection with people and other cats. Once he's acclimated, he's perfectly relaxed in the home. Nubs was rescued in the East Lawndale neighborhood of Chicago where he was thought to be a feral. A feline-lover fed him for a year outside before realizing that he wanted to follow her into her home. She has been fostering him inside every since. Nubs has all his claws ... (Read More)but is very gentle with them. He's not a scratcher. He is afraid of loud noises, so he's looking for a quiet home without small children, and without dogs '| although he loves other cats! He is healthy, de-wormed, neutered, up-to-date on rabies and distemper vaccinations, micro-chipped, and virus-tested positive for the FIV virus. He can live with other friendly cats as he's a lover, not a fighter. FIV is only transferred through deep bite wounds. His adoption fee of $60 benefits rescued cats. Siamese Mix    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Cats, Good with Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Submissive
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Dottie (about 2 yrs old as of 07/2016) is a spayed, female, calico point, short-haired, Siamese mix cat. Dottie was rescued as part of our Beach Park trailer park trapping and was one of 16 or more cats one resident had tried to take into her small trailer. Due to the cramped and unstable conditions, we don't know that she ever got to live as a normal pet cat. That is probably why she is a little shy at first. She seems calm and confident even as she squirms to run and hide while we're carrying her around at Petco, and at home she is happy to be out and about. She doesn't like to be carried around but likes when you pet her, especially ... (Read More)around her ears. She's an especially good hunter of toys. She loves treats and will come running for them. Dottie is not picky about food and eats wet and dry. She has a very sweet nature and could probably be a lap cat given the chance. Obviously she has lived with other cats just fine. She is tolerant of the small dog living in her foster home. We think she'd do well with older children who could be quiet and gentle around her but she'd probably be too easily startled by hyper toddlers or preschoolers. (Less)

However, as time went on, Marissa's family expanded to include more members, including a child, and she felt intimidated by the new additions an was returned to ACL in early 2016. Marissa enjoyed a 'summer retreat' in a foster home for a few weeks. Her foster mom reported that she settled in well and enjoys pets when she requests them!     Elm (born August 2015) is a neutered, male, grey, short-haired cat. Elm and his family suddenly showed up last fall and completely overwhelmed one of our small managed cat colonies. Elm quickly grew from a very shy kitten to a cat who cries to be picked up and one who loves butt scratches! He gets along great with other cats and is used to a big dog and one big noisy bird! He will probably do better with at least one other young playful animal companion to keep him company. Elm tested positive for antibodies to FIV, a slow acting virus that can cause mild to moderate immune impairment. Our vet says he's a very healthy cat. FIV is contagious ... Ellwood was caught during a mass trapping of more than 30 cats where 2/3 of the colony were kittens 4 months and younger. He was one of the oldest kittens caught and understandably he is still a little shy, especially with new people or places. Ellwood has become very sweet, he'll meow for attention, loves being pet, and will even get his purr going and roll over for belly rubs if you warm him up.     Ziva (2 yrs old as of 07/2016) is a spayed, female, black, long-haired cat. She was picked up with her friendly stray mom over the winter. Unfortunately, Ziva was already 4 months old and pretty wild from growing up out on the streets. Although we knew she would be a challenge, we worked with her because her mom was such a nice cat and little Ziva was already pretty submissive whenever we reached in to pet her. Rootbeer was born outside in October 2014 and trapped as a freezing little 10 week old with his sister right before New Year's.     Petra is a gorgeous, four-year-old, female brown and white classic tabby with golden eyes looking for a loving guardian. Petra was being fed outside and she was very consistent about showing up at the same place and same time every day. My friend told me about what he thought was a pregnant cat. Turned out she is just well-fed! I went to meet her and took her home (in a trap). When I brought her in to get spayed, I found that she had trapped a couple times before ... so she had already been spayed and micro-chipped. So, I got her vaccines up-dated, and had her re-checked for viruses, and treated for fleas and worms. Petra doesn't have ... (Read More)much use for humans. She likes when they keep her well-fed ... she loves her canned food. And she's very neat and tidy and uses her litter box perfectly. She does enjoy the company of other cats and hangs out with them happily in my house ... until I come in the room. And, then she darts back to her cat tree to hide. It's a bit insulting, but I think a patient cat-loving person can bring her around to appreciating humans a bit more. Why would someone take in a semi-feral cat? She'll live longer in the great indoors, she is a good friend to my other cats, and she's a no-bother kind of girl ... clean and neat. And, she's a challenge for those that enjoy socializing shy cats.     Genevieve (about 2 1/2 yrs old as of 07/2016) is a spayed, female, tortoiseshell, short-haired cat. Genevieve was found outside as a ridiculously friendly and outgoing stray. We can only guess at her age and background, but because she was so petite and still so playful we think she was just under 1 year old when we found her and she's still acts like a big kitten! We also suspect she was raised from very early on as an only cat because she is so open and loving with all people but so terrible at social interactions with other cats. She often gets upset just by the sight of other cats and sometimes throws tantrums around them. When she does ... (Read More)try to make friends she sneaks up on them and tries to play rough, like she never learned the right way to go about it from a mother cat and litter-mates. She even plays a little too rough with people so we wouldn't recommend her for a family with small children, but for the right family that likes to 'razzle' their cat and isn't phased by play bites she'll be tons of fun! If she's not playing, she loves to be cradled like a baby and held or carried around for ages. She is a very attention seeking cat and will probably do best as a spoiled only cat or sharing the spotlight with just one or two other young, playful, and hopefully more submissive cats, like her shy foster friend Sunshine.     Sunshine (5 yrs old as of 04/2016) is a spayed, female, orange and white, long-haired cat. Sunshine showed up in one of our feral colonies and had kittens before she could be trapped and fixed. When we caught her and her newborn kittens, we were amazed at how easy going she was with us as we checked out her kittens, and baffled when she let one of our volunteers shave off the matted parts of her thick fluffy coat, a grueling process that took 40 minutes and that most friendly cats wouldn't stay calm through. We now know that her subdued behavior was less because she was the best socialized cat in the world, and more because she is sweet and ... (Read More)incredibly submissive and puts up no resistance when she feels cornered. She has enjoyed being pet and brushed before but generally prefers to keep a slight distance and be admired from afar. Being such a delicate soul that takes a long time to trust and only comes out when it's quiet and peaceful, we think she would do best with a small family without noisy kids running around to overwhelm her. With other cats she generally keeps to herself and is non-confrontational but she has been known to hold her own, wrestling with her crazy little foster sister Genevieve, whom she loves dearly. Sunshine could be a good little sister to an older kitty that wants to be left alone or happily deal with a feisty kitten or anywhere in between. (Less)

PIease Read Before Adopting a Cat in Illinois
Cats can make good pets in Illinois if they match your IifestyIe. Domestic Cats have been intriguing companions for humans since ancient times. Worldwide, cats are even more popular than dogs as pets. Sadly, huge numbers of cats are in need of adoption and care. A cat owner who no longer wants the cat, or is no longer able to care for a cat, may drop the cat off at a shelter or simply abandon it. Overcrowding in shelters, along with too few adoptive families for the cats, leads to many wonderful pets having to be euthanized. Abandoned cats fend for themselves and breed in the wild, forming colonies of feral cats. Feral cats have such a difficult existence that they typically only live an average of two years, whereas domestic cats can live an average of twelve years with proper care. Organizations exist that can catch and tame feral kittens, and then place them in a home, but adult ferals can rarely be socialized to trust humans. Meanwhile, many prospective cat owners choose to purchase a kitten from a pet store or breeder, and may not know that even purebred cats and kittens are often available for adoption.

Once someone is ready for the responsibility of caring for a cat, adoption can be an incredibly rewarding decision. Adoption benefits cats, owners, and society alike. Adopting a cat is typically much less expensive than purchasing one. Shelters often have a wide selection of very sweet, friendly cats and kittens, including purebreds. Adoptive owners enjoy bonding with their pets, and have the extra satisfaction of knowing they have rescued a wonderful companion from a hard existence. Every cat adopted means one less cat has to be euthanized. Every kitten purchased new results in one less opportunity for adoption to take place. If you are ready for a pet cat, please consider adoption!

lnteresting Cat Trivia Low-Cost Illinois Spay & Neuter Clinics
All domestic cats are descended from African wild cats. Cats were considered divine in ancient Egypt and are depicted in hieroglyphs and found mummified in the tombs of Pharaohs. The cats in the Broadway show, Cats, were inspired by feral cats in London made famous as T.S. Eliot's Jellicle Cats. The largest domestic cat ever weighed was about 46 pounds!
