Domestic Cat    Age: Young Adult

Personality: Average Energy, Somewhat Dominant
Health: Spayed, Needs Vaccinations, Aggressive

3 yr old female tabby. Spayed and front paw declawed. She has issues. She can be calm and sweet, then she can have violent outbursts, with peeing and pooping uncontrollably. We cannot keep her. Praying to find a 'cat whisperer' to save her. She was a stray, my mom rescued her, and gave her to me.

Rescue Me ID: 16-02-09-00470Kate and Che (male)

Domestic Cat    Age: Adult

Compatibility: Good w/ Most Cats, Good w/ Most Dogs, Good w/ Kids and Adults
Personality: Low Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

Kate and Che, are a bonded pair of very shy tabby cats looking for a loving guardian. Found living together in a barn, Kate and Che were rescued and have adapted beautifully and appreciatively to the warmth and relaxation of indoor condo life. They are the best of friends often found snuggling or nesting together in their foster home. While they are not necessarily snuggly with humans, they are looking for someone who will enjoy their company without wanting huggable companion felines. Che is a five-year-old hunk of a long, sleek, male tabby with enormous soulful eyes and a big presence who loves to lounge on the sofa or hang out on the ... (Read More)cat tree. He has a super-mellow nature, and avoids confrontation from other cats. He's really just a big teddy bear that wants nothing more than a peaceful life. He loves food; whenever he hears a can being opened in the morning and evening, he pads to the kitchen and hangs out patiently by the door to make sure he's not forgotten. Kate is a 11-year-old petite female tabby with an endearing pixie face and the cutest white socks. Kate is coming out of her shell more each day and likes to explore her surroundings. She enjoys hanging out on the sofa grooming Che; she's a cougar! I understand from their foster mom that when an annoying photographer is not around, they are completely relaxed and happy. Here is a video showing how relaxed and happy they are in their foster home: https://youtu.be/Y8SSZpcP0wg These two are well-mannered in the home, use their litter box and scratching posts like good kitties. They get along with other felines in the home. And, while they are not currently living with dogs, they'd probably be fine with a dog that didn't chase them. Kate and Che are not at all aggressive with people, or with other cats. When nervous, they retreat or hide. They are neutered/spayed, up-to-date on vaccines, micro-chipped and virus-tested. Kate had a dental and only has three teeth left. Their adoption fee of $75 as a pair benefits the rescued pets of Azrael's Place. To meet and possibly adopt Kate and Che, please contact Lana at azraelsplace@hotmail.com or 708-218-4501. This duo is currently being fostered in Chicago's Lakeview neighborhood. (Less)

Alfie is an adorable, playful, friendly and cuddly four-month-old female tabby kitten without rear paws who is looking for a loving guardian. Alfie landed at Chicago Animal Care & Control when she was only five weeks old. Her rear feet were dangling and no one knows what happened except that it was a traumatic injury of some sort. She gets around amazingly well and has no fears of cats, dogs or people! She does best on carpet than hard wood as she is able to get better traction.     Collin is a fun, sweet, loving, playful and lovable, seven-month-old, male tabby kitten looking for a loving guardian. Collin walked into a North Lawndale high school on the coldest day last week. Luckily a kind-hearted teacher brought him home so he wouldn't have to go back outside on a zero degree day! All efforts to find his family failed; he wore no tags and wasn't micro-chipped. Collin loves people of all ages - including children, gets along with other cats - upon slow introduction, and dog-friendly cats. He is perfectly litter box trained, and loves a scratching post. Animal ID: 16-01-23-00283Elm (male)

Domestic Cat    Age: Young Kitten

Compatibility: Good w/ Most Cats, Good w/ Most Dogs, Good w/ Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current, FIV

Elm (about 5 months old as of 1/21) is a neutered male grey short-haired kitten. Elm and his family of kitten siblings plus a few adults just suddenly showed up and completely overwhelmed one of our small backyard colonies in Zion. We got everyone trapped and took the kittens in to foster even though they were already 3 months old, older than we like to get them in to be tamed. Because of the late start, Elm will probably always be a more cautious cat, but in just a few weeks he has grown from a very shy kitten to one who cries to be picked up and loves butt scratches! He gets along great with other cats and is used to a big dog and one big ... (Read More)noisy bird! He will probably do better with at least one other young playful animal companion to keep him company. Elm tested positive for antibodies to FIV, a slow acting virus that can cause mild to moderate immune impairment. Kittens are sometimes able to completely fight off the disease, so he will need to be tested again when he is older to confirm. He has been taking anti-viral medication and the vet says he's a very healthy kitten. He will be retested by our organization at 6 months of age. If he is FIV positive it is contagious to other cats but only through deep bite wounds, something not likely to happen given a slow introduction, so we will be happy to adopt him to an FIV negative cat family as long as they will be cautious and patient integrating him to their home. Most cats with FIV live to be seniors and pass away from common old age conditions, so it doesn't mean he won't have a long, happy life! Adoption fee includes neuter, vaccinations, microchip, parasite treatment, and 2 week health guarantee. (Less)

Nora (about 4-5 years old as of January, 2016) is a spayed female brown tabby short-haired cat. Nora just showed up at a feral cat colony in Waukegan with a few other friendly cats. She is a major attention hound. She could happily spend all day sitting and laying in laps and will purr and head butt people for attention. Nora does okay with other animals in the room as long as she is in a lap getting attention, but she is taking her time getting over grumbling at her new foster family's animals when she is on the floor, so we think she might prefer to be a spoiled only cat or just share her home with a much more timid animal who will let her ...     Nick (about 1 and a half years old as of January, 2016) is a neutered male brown tabby and white short-haired cat. Nick just showed up out of the blue at a feral cat colony in Waukegan with a few other friendly cats. Rescue Me ID: 15-11-29-00325Pip (female)

Maine Coon Mix    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Not Good with Other Cats
Personality: Average Energy
Health: Spayed, Needs Vaccinations, Fearful/Anxious

Please consider opening up your home and heart to this beautiful girl! Pip is a cute fluffy girl and she is half maine coon. She wasn't always anxious but has developed it ever since I got a new kitten and had family over. She doesn't like kids or adults touching her, at least not until she gets to know you. She LOVES to play! So even if she won't allow you to touch her she will still play with you. Pip loves to catch hair ties! She also loves foil balls thrown and of course she loves catnip! I want to make sure that she goes to a person who doesn't have any other animals or kids. She needs someone who is willing to work with her and be very ... (Read More)patient with her. She will eventually come to you but only on her terms. She really is a sweet girl once she warms up to you. Pip also loves string!!! I recently took her to the vet and she is healthy. Pip does need her vaccinations but other than that she is a health girl! (Less)

American Shorthair Mix    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Not Good with Other Cats, Good with Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Very Submissive
Health: Needs to be Neutered, Leukemia (FeLV)

Sammy is a very sweet always purring cat who loves to be petted and played with. He was a stray who came regularly to my backyard where I put food for strays. He went inside my house voluntarily and I was able to take him to the vet. Unfortunately, the vet says he has feline leukemia and he cannot be with my 5 other healthy cats because it is highly contagious. Sammy is very adoptable but only with someone who has no other pets. He needs the love and attention he so much deserves because he can give so much of himself if you give him a chance. My vet says that if I cannot find a home for him, they have to euthanize him because it is ... (Read More)not ethical to send him back to the streets and he can spread leukemia to other stray cats. I hope you adopt sweet Sammy and give him the love he so much wants from a human companion. (Less)

Domestic Cat    Age: Kitten

Compatibility: Good with Most Cats, Good with Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Sara (about 8 months old as of mid-Jan) is a spayed female black short-haired kitten. Sara was found as one of two little kittens under a porch in Waukegan and taken into foster care. She is the perfect affectionate, cuddly kitten who can spend hours cuddling on your chest. She is good with kids and does great with other cats. She is the 'big sister' to several younger foster kittens and would love to have a feline companion, but she hasn't had much dog experience yet so a very calm, cat respectful dog would be good for her. She runs to her foster mom every day and jumps up for cuddle time on her chest.

Domestic Cat    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Cats, Good with Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Hillary (about 4-5 years old as of December, 2015) is a spayed female torbico (a tabby-calico) short haired cat. A volunteer noticed Hillary under a porch a few days in a row with a sparkly rhinestone collar and thought maybe she was someone's lost pet. They knocked on the door of the house and asked the people if they knew anything about the cat hanging around their porch and they said, 'Yeah, that was our cat.' When asked why she was outside now they said it was because she got into some roach poison they put out and it made a patch of hair on her back fall out so they put her outside. Horrified the volunteer asked for permission to ... (Read More)take her and thankfully they agreed. We had her checked out by a vet and they couldn't say with certainty whether the hair that fell out on her back could have been from a chemical burn from roach poison but it is healing so we are not too concerned. She is a perfectly fine cat even with a patch of shorter hair on her back and we really don't understand why her old family rejected her this way. She is a great little cat, friendly with everyone, likes being held, gentle and sweet, and gets along fine with other cats but would probably do well as a single cat, too. We're not sure how she is with dogs but she could probably do okay with a quiet, cat respectful dog. She'd be a great fit for just about any family that would pamper her the way she deserves and not just give her a fancy collar and then throw her out in the cold. Adoption fee includes spay, vaccinations, microchip, parasite treatment and two week health guarantee. $50 cat adoption in February so every kitty gets a home. (Less)

Animal ID: 15-11-20-00666Elwood (male)

Domestic Cat    Age: Kitten

Compatibility: Good w/ Most Cats, Good w/ Most Dogs, Good w/ Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

Elwood (about 8 months old as of 12/17) is a neutered male grey tuxedo shorthaired cat. Elwood was caught during a mass trapping of more than 30 cats in Gurnee where sadly 2/3rds of the colony were kittens 4 months and under, proving just how important it is to trap-neuter-return cats as soon as possible. Elwood was one of the oldest kittens caught and understandably he is still a little shy, especially with new people or places. Elwood has gotten very sweet, he'll mew for attention, loves being petted, and will even get his purr going and roll over for belly rubs if you warm him up, but he is still easily startled and will sometimes get ... (Read More)spooked and run to hide for a minute and collect himself. He's getting braver every day though, and has always had a soft spot for little kids who he lets do anything to him, even when a toddler made a game of dripping water on his head! He might never be a super outgoing cat with new people and places, but we think for his one special forever family he will be an amazing little buddy. He has been fostered with other cats, dogs of all sizes, and kids 2-11 years old, so he'd be great for just about any home that will continue to work with him to build confidence. We think he'd do best with at least one other young playful animal to keep him company like his 'Blues' brother Jake. He'll be happier with someone around 24/7 and he seems to have more confidence with a role model around to show him how to brave. (Less)

Hey! My name is Skittles! I would love to meet you-I'm very affectionate and love to play with my toys. I'm a gray tortoise shell cat with quite a bit of rosy red color in my collar area. I'm about 2 years old and I have been spayed and microchipped. I do still have my claws but I have been very respectful of furniture and the like. I am currently being fostered with another cat and he's a bit of a bully to me. I'm hoping to be paired with another mild-mannered cat or as a solitary feline. I'm a bit nervous, under current conditions, to let my true super cat personality show but I know you're going to like my sweet self. When do I get to ... (Read More)meet you? (Less)

Domestic Cat    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Cats, Good with Adults (Not Kids)
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

The Blooming of Polly Polly came to me in November of 2012 at the age of 12 weeks as a single orphan. She was a gorgeous solid black cat but extremely frightened. She would have to be cornered in order to touch and hold her. She remained stiff as a board and felt very uncomfortable while being held. It was obvious that she had very little human socializing. I put her in a room with several other kittens her age and a friendly but shy cat. She remained afraid of me and would run from me when I approached. However, she bonded to the other kittens and cat. Slowly, I was able to pet her while she ate. After several months it became apparent that ... (Read More)she would not warm up on her own with my attention, so I took her and Finnegan, who she seemed to like the best, into my office where they would have to be with me quite a bit more. Since it was a much smaller room with lots of hiding places, I think she became more secure. When I fed her and Finnegan, up on a table, she was open to letting me pet her and scratch her. It wasn't long before she would come over to me and sleep under my desk by my feet. I would reach down and pet her. For a couple months it got progressively better and now she does not run and hide when I approach her. She actually flops down and wants me to rub her tummy. She is not scared of me anymore, nor does she run from me. This took time and patience to get her to warm up to me and enjoy my company. Now, she lays by my feet and won't leave me alone until I play with her and pet her. She loves to be scratched and petted now. She might not ever like strangers, but she has grown to trust her personal human (me). Polly has bloomed into a sweet and loving cat. She will need an understanding and patient adult human or two and a quiet home. She gets along great with other cats. (Less)

Thierry is a delightful tortie with 'special needs'. Although she has a left rear leg that is weaker than the others, she will still jump up onto the back of a couch or chair for a nap during the day and evening; it may take a few tries! She is very friendly and enjoys laying on or next to her foster family members and especially likes it when her head and neck are scratched. Because of her rear leg weakness using the litter box can be a challenge at times, but with some small adaptations to the box she is successful.     Paddington was given to me at just one week old. All 4 were sturdy and healthy, but just didn't have a mom. I bottle fed them, and then introduced them to a lactating female named Sunny. Sunny immediately accepted them as her own, even though she had 4 biological babies the same age already. I rotated them so everyone could get their share of the groceries and loving comfort from mom. Sunny had 8 babies! Well, fast forward to December 2014'|. Paddington is the ultimate sweet little girl.     Lucy is a fabulous female who is fun, beautiful and sassy. (We probably should've named her JLo.) She also has Glaucoma in her left eye. She gets eye drops applied as follows: Flurbiprofen ($17 bottle) 1 drop to the left eye once daily and Dorzolamide ($68 a bottle) 1 drop to both ... Since I am signed up with Walgreens prescription program ($20 yearly membership fee), the Flurbiprofen is $15 bottle and the Dorzolamide drops to $15 a bottle.     Jazz is a great guy who is looking for his forever person or family after being found as a stray wandering around outside in St. Charles. Jazz follows his foster mom around the house and sits in her lap for attention. His hobbies are looking out the window and eating food. Animal ID: 9755Chloe (female)

Persian Mix    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Not Good with Other Cats, Good with Adults (Not Kids)
Personality: Low Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Spayed

Chloe was born approximately August of 2010. She, and her son were found in a garage, probably looking for warmth with the coming winter. Chloe is a beautiful girl with big bright gold eyes. She was quite tiny for her age, weighing a scant 6 pounds 11 ounces. She has blossomed and now weighs around 8 %BD pounds. Since she was a stray, she was very matted when first found and had to be shaved to remove the mats. She looked a little strange in her 'lion cut' with fur on her head and feet looking like boots. She will need brushing to remain matt free, but she enjoys it. Takes only a few minutes 2-3 times a week. Chloe has developed into a ... (Read More)wonderfully social little girl. She greets you when you walk into a room and will purr and wait to be petted. She will sit quietly or sleep in a sunny window taking her nap. It takes Chloe a while to get used to another cat, but she adjusts well. She presently has several housemates, one of which is her son. She enjoys the company of her people, especially if they could spend lots of time at home and who don't mind giving her a brushing a few times a week. She would do best in an adult home since she is a couch potato and would be more comfortable without young children. Teen children would be great. She is very neat and clean. Doesn't get into paperwork or other things that you may have lying around. Totally litter trained. Her adoption fee includes spaying, up to date on vaccines, (including rabies) combo tested negative and microchipped. Your entire family is required to meet Chloe. If you have it in your heart to adopt this beautiful dainty girl, and have a family that can give her time and attention she deserves, please fill out the adoption application and contact us for your meeting with her.     Cataleya is a very curious brown tabby. She came to us pregnant and delivered 7 healthy kittens (all have been adopted). She not only took great care of her babies, but she pitched to help in with another group of kittens when their mom took longer to recover. She is now looking for her forever home. She likes to play with the rest of the cats and kittens in her foster home. At first, she would swat at our 3 dogs, but now she just ignores them. When she is finished eating, she makes sure to cover up her food with whatever is handy - toys, strings of yarn, paper towels - she is one smart cookie! She is completely litter boxed trained.

Domestic Cat    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Cats, Good with Adults (Not Kids)
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Hi! I'm Buttercup! If you're looking for an eloquent conversationalist, I'm your cat. I greet you at the door with a running dialogue of meows, trills and chirps. When I'm not talking, I'm purring and climbing into your lap. I love to nuzzle your nose to let you know how much I love you. You might not know it since I'm such a talkative little love bug, but my story will break your heart. I was left in a carrier outside the Animal Care League overnight with a note that read, 'We lost our home. Please take good care of my sweetie pie.' Animal Care League was so loud and scary that I defended myself any time someone even looked at me. Finally, ... (Read More)my foster mom brought me home. Once I was in her home, I let her see that I'm the most loving, affectionate cat ever! Right after I got to my foster home, I got a severe eye ulcer. That got all better, and then when I got spayed, they found an infection there too. They say I'm lucky that I came out of all that perfectly healthy. I feel MUCH better now. But my foster mom said that although she loves me very much, she can't be my forever home. So you can find me in the Library room at the Animal Care League, waiting for you to come take me home! I am still a little shaken up from all I've been through, so I need a family that will understand that sometimes I get spooked, especially around strangers. I really can't wait to find someone that will let me be their personal assistant, playmate, lap warmer and conversation partner. Maybe that someone is you? (Less)

This charming kitty is Binx! Our delightful guy is super affectionate and interested in exploring and watching over all the comings and goings around him! One of his favorite activities is convincing people to stop whatever they're doing to participate in cuddles, and 'making biscuits' with his paws! Binx has tested positive for Feline Immunodeficiency Virus. FIV is a slow virus that affects a cat's immune system over a period of years. Cats with FIV can live long, happy, healthy lives.     Fallon is a handsome, outgoing, sweet, goofy and tall, two-year-old, long and muscular, male patch tabby cat with golden-green eyes looking for a loving guardian. He loves people and with proper introduction warms up to other cats and dogs. He's currently sharing a home with four cats and two dogs!     Gerald (roughly 3-4 years old as of August, 2015) is a neutered male white and orange tabby shorthaired cat. Poor Gerald was found as an injured stray, received wound treatment, was neutered and re-released. Just a month or so later Gerald was found injured again, but this time with a far worse bite injury that required weeks of treatment and a skin graft. Gerald is now completely healed and looking for a second chance at a forever home. Given all that Gerald has been through he can be ... (Read More)a bit leery of new people or places and would do best in a cat experienced home. Once Gerald opens up to you he is a sweetheart. He loves looking out the window and he is an independent cat that seeks attention on his own terms. He's okay being picked up and will approach people for pets once he gets to know them and just goes crazy bashing his head into them and kneading his paws. Gerald gets along with other cats and has lived with several big dogs which he does not seem to mind. He will need a little time to adjust to a new home and would do better without very small children not because he would harm them but would probably hide from them. While living at PetCo he is outgoing, likes to look around, plays a bit and is very mellow. Nothing really upsets him. His favorite thing is to plop down in the middle of the floor and just watch what's going on. He rubs the fur off his noses when riding in a cat carrier but it will grow back. He loves to be brushed!     Paige (6 mo as of 10/15) is a spayed female black and white kitten. Paige was rescued as part of a big trapping in a trailer park colony. From a fluke of genetics she and many of her cousins from the colony are polydactyl- meaning she has extra toes! Paige was caught a little older than ideal so she has taken longer to warm up to people. On the plus side, during his recovery we found out just how sweet he is and realized he was a good candidate for adoption as a pet cat! He's a great little older gentleman. Rex was trapped, neutered, and returned to a feral colony last summer but was very friendly and decided he needed to be inside- he kept trying to run into his caretaker's house and wouldn't take no for an answer. Now Rex is readjusting to life as an indoor pet in his new foster home but is very happy and purrs when petted. He's nervous when we take him out and will even give a little hiss but he doesn't mean it and we think it will get better with time as he becomes confident that he'll be taken care of from now on. Rex is FIV positive but very ... (Read More)healthy, however due to the risk of transmission of the virus through bite wounds he would need a very slow and closely supervised introduction into a home with any other FIV negative cats. He gets along very well with other cats in his foster home. (Less)

Domestic Cat    Age: Kitten

Compatibility: Good w/ Most Cats, Good w/ Most Dogs, Good w/ Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Submissive
Health: Neutered

Rootbeer (about 8 months old as of 6/13) is a neutered male brown tabby shorthaired kitten. Rootbeer was born outside last October and trapped as a freezing little 10 week old with his sister right before New Year's. Because they were a few weeks older than ideal it has taken them time to gain confidence with people, but Rootbeer loves cheek scratches and has an amazingly loud motor when you get him purring. He's still shy around new people and absolutely hates being held, but every night he can be found sleeping with someone in his foster family. He definitely loves to play with other cats or people, although some days he just keeps to ... (Read More)himself but then again that might change in a quiet home! Because of his lower confidence and because he LOVES other cats so much we think Rootbeer will do best adopted with another cat or kitten to keep him company and bring out his brave side. His foster sister Ziva is his best buddy and it would be great if they could stay together. He is being fostered around cats, dogs, and older kids so he could adjust to a lot of different families, but we think he'd do better with no kids or only older, quieter kids who won't make it hard for this shy boy to settle in.     Petra is a gorgeous, four-year-old, female brown and white classic tabby with golden eyes looking for a loving guardian. Petra was being fed outside and she was very consistent about showing up at the same place and same time every day. My friend told me about what he thought was a pregnant cat. Turned out she is just well-fed! I went to meet her and took her home (in a trap). When I brought her in to get spayed, I found that she had trapped a couple times before ... so she had already been spayed and micro-chipped. So, I got her vaccines up-dated, and had her re-checked for viruses, and treated for fleas and worms. Petra doesn't have ... (Read More)much use for humans. She likes when they keep her well-fed ... she loves her canned food. And she's very neat and tidy and uses her litter box perfectly. She does enjoy the company of other cats and hangs out with them happily in my house ... until I come in the room. And, then she darts back to her cat tree to hide. It's a bit insulting, but I think a patient cat-loving person can bring her around to appreciating humans a bit more. Why would someone take in a semi-feral cat? She'll live longer in the great indoors, she is a good friend to my other cats, and she's a no-bother kind of girl ... clean and neat. And, she's a challenge for those that enjoy socializing shy cats. Petra is extremely healthy, spayed, up-to-date on rabies and distemper vaccines, micro-chipped, virus-tested negative and treated with revolution for fleas and worms.     Genevieve (about 1 and a half years old as of August, 2015) is a spayed female tortoiseshell short-haired cat. Genevieve was found outside as a ridiculously friendly and outgoing stray. We can only guess at her age and background, but because she was so petite and still so playful we think she was just under 1 year old when we found her and she's still like a big kitten! We also suspect she was raised from very early on as an only cat because she is so open and loving with all people but so terrible at social interactions with other cats. She often gets upset just by the sight of other cats and sometimes throws tantrums around them. ... (Read More)When she does try to make friends she just sneaks up on them and tries to play, roughly, like she never learned the right way to go about it from a mother cat and littermates. She even plays a little too rough with people so we wouldn't recommend her for a family with small children, but for the right family that likes to 'razzle' their cat and isn't phased by play bites she'll be tons of fun! If she's not playing she loves to be cradled like a baby and held or carried around for ages-she is a very attention seeking cat and will probably do best as a spoiled only cat or sharing the spotlight with just one or two other young, playful, and hopefully more submissive cats, like her shy foster friend Sunshine.     Sometimes going 'under the radar' is good, and sometimes it is not. My name is Dara and I've been going underneath the radar of potential adopters WAY TOO LONG!     Sunshine (about 3-4 years old as of November, 2014) is a spayed female orange with white longhaired cat. Sunshine showed up in one of our feral colonies and had kittens before she could be trapped and fixed. When we caught her and her newborn kittens we were amazed at how easy going she was with us as we checked out her kittens, and baffled when she let one of our volunteers shave off the matted parts of her thick fluffy coat, a grueling process that took 40 minutes and that most friendly cats wouldn't stay calm through. We now know that her subdued behavior was less because she was the best socialized cat in the world and more because she ... (Read More)is sweet and incredibly submissive and puts up no resistance when she feels cornered. But despite being very shy and selective about who she trusts we've found she does really love being petted and brushed and it seems with time she is opening up to life as a pampered house cat. Being such a delicate soul that takes a long time to trust and only comes out when it's quiet and peaceful we think she would do best with a small family without noisy kids running around to overwhelm her. With other cats she generally keeps to herself and is non-confrontational but she has been known to hold her own wrestling with her crazy little foster sister Genevieve. Sunshine could be a good little sister to an older kitty that wants to be left alone or happily deal with a feisty kitten and anywhere in between. (Less)

PIease Read Before Adopting a Cat in Illinois
Cats can make good pets in Illinois if they match your IifestyIe. Domestic Cats have been intriguing companions for humans since ancient times. Worldwide, cats are even more popular than dogs as pets. Sadly, huge numbers of cats are in need of adoption and care. A cat owner who no longer wants the cat, or is no longer able to care for a cat, may drop the cat off at a shelter or simply abandon it. Overcrowding in shelters, along with too few adoptive families for the cats, leads to many wonderful pets having to be euthanized. Abandoned cats fend for themselves and breed in the wild, forming colonies of feral cats. Feral cats have such a difficult existence that they typically only live an average of two years, whereas domestic cats can live an average of twelve years with proper care. Organizations exist that can catch and tame feral kittens, and then place them in a home, but adult ferals can rarely be socialized to trust humans. Meanwhile, many prospective cat owners choose to purchase a kitten from a pet store or breeder, and may not know that even purebred cats and kittens are often available for adoption.

Once someone is ready for the responsibility of caring for a cat, adoption can be an incredibly rewarding decision. Adoption benefits cats, owners, and society alike. Adopting a cat is typically much less expensive than purchasing one. Shelters often have a wide selection of very sweet, friendly cats and kittens, including purebreds. Adoptive owners enjoy bonding with their pets, and have the extra satisfaction of knowing they have rescued a wonderful companion from a hard existence. Every cat adopted means one less cat has to be euthanized. Every kitten purchased new results in one less opportunity for adoption to take place. If you are ready for a pet cat, please consider adoption!

All domestic cats are descended from African wild cats. The cats in the Broadway show, Cats, were inspired by feral cats in London made famous as T.S. Eliot's Jellicle Cats. The largest domestic cat ever weighed was about 46 pounds!
