Checkers is a handsome, gentle and relaxed, 11-year-old, male ginger tabby looking for a loving guardian. Checkers landed at Chicago Animal Care and Control as a stray earlier this year. Checkers enjoys being pet and enjoys occasional playtime. He would probably be happiest in a home with people who enjoy a low-key cat who likes hanging out on the couch and looking out the windows. He may be happiest as the only feline in the home. He doesn't take up a lot of space, currently, he's being fostered in a bedroom where he enjoys the nooks, crannies, and beds to lounge in. He sleeps in the oddest positions and loves to watch the world from ... (Read More)the window. He would love more interaction with a feline lover. He'd be just as happy in a small apartment as long as he has a human to dote on him. To meet and possibly foster or adopt Checkers, please contact Fortunate Pooches and Lab Rescue at cats@fortunatelabrescue.org Checkers' adoption fee is sponsored. He's a healthy senior with all his claws; neutered, up-to-date on vaccines and micro-chipped. He is on thyroid and anti-anxiety meds which will be supplied. (Less)

Health: Needs to be Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Approved homes ONLY! We will be screening and picky on where they go. They were previously feral and have learned to trust humans, now they're finally ready for their new families. (Read More)They need a family to further their confidence in people. -THESE ARE NOT CHRISTMAS GIFTS- These kittens/cat will not be rehomed as a gift because in most cases once the kitten or cat is 'old news' they're often rehomed, given away, or dumped. Which we DO NOT want. Personalities: Nala - She is very friendly and sweet. She is playful and loves cuddles. She's not shy and loves to be held like a baby in your arms. Alfie - He is shy and sweet. He's a bit of a lazy boy but loves to play too! He loves to give kisses (licks) any chance he can. Willow - She can be shy but is very playful! She is sweet and loving. Maine Coon Mix    Age: Senior

Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Olive is a beautiful, and loving, senior, seven-pound, female four-paw-declawed Maine Coon-mix cat looking for a loving guardian. Olive is a gorgeous girl who is an easy companion. She prefers to be the one and only pet in your life. She loves snuggling in your bed, on your lap and in your arms. She gives gentle kisses and likes to climb up high and look out windows. She'll even bat a toy around! She would love to go to a loving home where she can be doted on and enjoyed. We are looking for a special cat-lover who has no other pets and knows how to give subcutaneous fluids, or is willing to learn because she is in the early stages of ... (Read More)kidney insufficiency. Found sitting in a cat carrier in a Wilmette alley, we don't know Olive's backstory. She was found during the heavy rains a couple months ago, and the carrier was filled with not only rain water but her urine. I can't even imagine the torment she went through. She was given a couple baths, full bloodwork, and a virus-test. Her kidney values are not great, so she is eating a dry prescription kidney diet and receiving daily subcutaneous fluids, which she tolerates beautifully. I can't seem to find a canned food she enjoys. She seems happy and healthy now, so she's not quite a hospice candidate, but she'll benefit from continued fluids and special food. She is perfect with her litter box and just loves to spend time with her people. Her adoption fee of $75 benefits rescued pets and includes a generous supply of fluids and prescription food.     Tiger Lily was abandoned by a neighbor. She lived outside for a time. Finally she came to me each night for food and I was able to determine that she was a housecat and not aggressive.     Robin, short-haired brown tabby female, was fixed as part of a large cat colony in July 2017. She was taken into foster care with a family with teens at about 3 months old. Because she was a little older than usual when brought inside, she's taken longer to come around to love humans. Robin is learning to trust people and is especially attuned to her teen age foster mom who understands her need to go slowly. Robin could be a great companion for another cat that would show her around.

Domestic Cat    Age: Young Adult

Gatsby (about 1 year old as of June, 2017) is a neutered male black with a grey tail longhaired cat. Gatsby was trap neuter-returned as an older kitten that didn't seem tamable back in summer of 2016 but a few months later a woman found him and took him in to rescue him. He had fleas and his initial rescuer gave an 'all natural' over the counter flea remedy and Gatsby started having a terrible reaction. She reached out to us for help and two of our volunteers worked for hours washing the sticky, oily substance off of him as he was very near death. Thankfully unlike many cats who fall victim unregulated store bought flea remedies Gatsby ... After a few weeks we moved him into a more quiet foster home and he started to come around. He is now okay with being picked up briefly and loves to be petted by the people he trusts, he just isn't very outgoing in new situations and is very sensitive to loud noises or sudden movements. We couldn't recommend him for a home with an excitable dog or young hyper kids but he does great with other cats and anyone who can be calm and patient with him. (Less)

Alice (about 12 weeks old as of 8/24) is a black female shorthaired kitten. Alice was rescued from the inside of a car engine as a small kitten. This little stowaway had some stowaways of her own though; as one of the few poor kittens we've ever found covered with lice her foster mom just couldn't resist naming her Alice because she was All-Lice!     Snarf (about 3 and a half months old as of 8/16) is a female dark tortieshell shorthaired kitten. Snarf was found with her mom and siblings living under a carport in Waukegan. The kittens were a little on the older side and very wild like their mama, and poor little Snarf took the longest to come around to loving people so she is the only 'ThunderCat' kitten left up for adoption from her litter. Domestic Cat    Age: Young Adult

Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

Krispy (about 2-4 years old as of July, 2017) was found as a friendly stray near the Waukegan Popeye's Chicken restaurant living out of their dumpster before moving on to handouts from a nearby caretaker who quickly got him trapped and neutered. They didn't realize he was friendly until after his surgery, hence his little eartip that would have marked him as fixed if he were to go back outside, but in the recovery room he immediately started charming the surgical staff so he went home straight into foster care. He loves people, he will meow to them and wind around legs to get attention. He loves to be pet and scratched but Krispy is a very ... (Read More)playful boy and he will take too much stimulation as an invitation to wrestle. His foster family are working on teaching him to be more gentle, but he may not be the perfect kitty for a family with very small children who won't know any better than to provoke him or with people with bleeding or immune disorders. He still thinks being held is weird after fending for himself on the streets and simply won't tolerate being cradled like a baby, but he loves to smash against people and cuddle on his own terms. He adores playing with other cats and would do best with a young playful kitty companion who won't mind wrestling with him every day. He has already been returned from one potential home where his intended playmate couldn't handle his type of rough a tumble so another really playful confident kitty or kitten is a must. We're not sure yet how he will handle being around dogs but with a cat-friendly dog that would be okay if Krispy wanted to wrestle with them, too, he could give it a try! At Petco Vernon Hills, where his video is taken, he has adopted a 5 mo old male kitten. The play and sleep together. Smidge thinks Uncle Krispy is the coolest. They would have fun staying together.     Jayne is a very sweet, snuggly, shy and gentle, seven-year-old, female black and white tuxedo cat looking for a loving guardian. Snuggles is Jayne's middle name as it is her favorite thing to do! She is talkative, loving and playful when she gets to know you. She is nervous in new surroundings at first, but wonderful once she gets comfortable. She has excellent litter box habits and loves her cat scratching pad. Jayne adores people and enjoys the attention of older respectful children. She is also fine with other cats. Animal ID: 17-02-19-00436Genevieve (female)

Domestic Cat    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Cats, Good with Adults (Not Kids)
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Genevieve (about 2 and a half years old as of July, 2016) is a spayed female tortoiseshell shorthaired cat. Genevieve was found outside as a ridiculously friendly and outgoing stray. We can only guess at her age and background, but because she was so petite and still so playful we think she was just under 1 year old when we found her and she's still like a big kitten! We also suspect she was raised from very early on as an only cat because she is so open and loving with all people but so terrible at social interactions with most other cats. Although she has adapted to life in a foster home with lots of other cats she often gets upset just by ... (Read More)the sight of other cats and sometimes throws tantrums around them. When she does try to make friends she just sneaks up on them and tries to play, roughly, like she never learned the right way to go about it from a mother cat and littermates. She even plays a little too rough with people so we wouldn't recommend her for a family with small children, but for the right family that likes to 'razzle' their cat and isn't phased by play bites she'll be tons of fun! If she's not playing she loves to be cradled like a baby and held or carried around for ages- she is a very attention seeking cat and will probably do best as a spoiled only cat or sharing the spotlight with just one or two other young, playful, and hopefully more submissive cats, like her shy foster friend Sunshine.     Fila (about 5 months old as of Feb 2017) is a spayed female black kitten. Fila and her siblings were born into a colony of feral cats in Round Lake Beach and rescued as young kittens. Domestic Cat    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good with Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current, FIV

Hook (about 3 years old as of November, 2016) is a neutered male grey shorthaired cat. Hook started showing up at a feral colony in Waukegan as a scared stray cat back in March of 2016. One day in May he came by to eat with a broken leg bent like a 'Hook' but avoided all efforts to trap him for 5 months. Finally just before the weather turned he was caught and turned out to be very sweet. Unfortunately his bent leg was entirely healed in place and the vet couldn't do anything to straighten it without causing him more pain, so now he just has one weird leg and walks a little funny with a short stride. He is happy to be an indoor cat ... (Read More)again and likes to sit up and beg for treats and be cuddled and petted. He gets along well with cats and kids, but we haven't seen how he handles living with dogs yet so we would recommend only a very calm, respectful dog for him. Hook has tested positive for antibodies to FIV, a slow acting virus that can cause mild to moderate immune impairment. It is contagious to other cats but only through deep bite wounds, something not likely to happen given a slow introduction, so we will be happy to adopt him to an FIV negative cat family as long as they will be cautious and patient integrating him to their home. Most cats with FIV live to be seniors and pass away from common old age conditions, so it doesn't mean he won't have a long, happy life! (Less)

Daisy was born to a feral mother cat who had literally been dumping her kittens at one of our caretakers' house for years. That sounds awfully needy but she is actually the most independent kitty from her ... (Read More)litter. She is sweet and affectionate but doesn't want to cuddle until she is done playing and doesn't feel the need to be on top of someone smothering them every time she gets a few pets. That said, when she is in full cuddle mode she loves serious, firm pets so strong they pull the skin around her eyes back and exaggerate her already naturally silly long skinny face. She is very energetic and alert which can make her seem jumpy or skittish, but it's really just her goofy, playful nature showing. Dottie was rescued as part of our Beach Park trailer park trapping and was one of 16 or more cats one resident had tried to take into her small trailer. Due to the cramped and unstable conditions, we don't know that she ever got to live as a normal pet cat. That is probably why she is a little shy at first. Personality: Average Energy, Very Submissive
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

Terrence (2 yrs old as of 03/2016) is a neutered, male, buff tabby, short-haired cat. Terrence and his sister were born in a neighborhood of retirees that took pity on them and fed them enough to thrive, giving them just enough attention to keep them interested in people but never teaching them how to be a 'pet' cats used to being picked up or living underfoot in a home. They were happy living this in-between life until winter came early and most of the people who fed them left for vacation homes in warmer climates, leaving these guys hungry, scared and lonely. When found, we took them into foster care where they've been slowly coming ... (Read More)around. After many months, Terrence seems happy living inside but hasn't really bonded with people yet. He'll play with toys for human interaction but hates being reached for and doesn't seem thrilled about being held if you do manage to catch him. He gets along great with the other cats and dogs in his foster home. He quickly becomes a big brother to any new fosters that come into the foster home, so he could be a great companion for existing pets of a family willing to give him as long as he needs to come around to really trusting them. Animal ID: 14-10-20-00793Genevieve (female)

Domestic Cat    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good w/ Most Cats, Not Good w/ Dogs, Good w/ Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Genevieve (about 2 1/2 yrs old as of 07/2016) is a spayed, female, tortoiseshell, short-haired cat. Genevieve was found outside as a ridiculously friendly and outgoing stray. We can only guess at her age and background, but because she was so petite and still so playful we think she was just under 1 year old when we found her and she's still acts like a big kitten! We also suspect she was raised from very early on as an only cat because she is so open and loving with all people but so terrible at social interactions with other cats. She often gets upset just by the sight of other cats and sometimes throws tantrums around them. When she does ... (Read More)try to make friends she sneaks up on them and tries to play rough, like she never learned the right way to go about it from a mother cat and litter-mates. She even plays a little too rough with people so we wouldn't recommend her for a family with small children, but for the right family that likes to 'razzle' their cat and isn't phased by play bites she'll be tons of fun! If she's not playing, she loves to be cradled like a baby and held or carried around for ages. She is a very attention seeking cat and will probably do best as a spoiled only cat or sharing the spotlight with just one or two other young, playful, and hopefully more submissive cats, like her shy foster friend Sunshine. Animal ID: 14-07-14-00114Sunshine (female)

Domestic Cat    Age: Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Cats, Good with Adults (Not Kids)
Personality: Average Energy, Submissive
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Sunshine (5 yrs old as of 04/2016) is a spayed, female, orange and white, long-haired cat. Sunshine showed up in one of our feral colonies and had kittens before she could be trapped and fixed. When we caught her and her newborn kittens, we were amazed at how easy going she was with us as we checked out her kittens, and baffled when she let one of our volunteers shave off the matted parts of her thick fluffy coat, a grueling process that took 40 minutes and that most friendly cats wouldn't stay calm through. We now know that her subdued behavior was less because she was the best socialized cat in the world, and more because she is sweet and ... (Read More)incredibly submissive and puts up no resistance when she feels cornered. She has enjoyed being pet and brushed before but generally prefers to keep a slight distance and be admired from afar. Being such a delicate soul that takes a long time to trust and only comes out when it's quiet and peaceful, we think she would do best with a small family without noisy kids running around to overwhelm her. With other cats she generally keeps to herself and is non-confrontational but she has been known to hold her own, wrestling with her crazy little foster sister Genevieve, whom she loves dearly. Sunshine could be a good little sister to an older kitty that wants to be left alone or happily deal with a feisty kitten or anywhere in between. (Less)

PIease Read Before Adopting a Cat in Illinois
Cats can make good pets in Illinois if they match your IifestyIe. Domestic Cats have been intriguing companions for humans since ancient times. Worldwide, cats are even more popular than dogs as pets. Sadly, huge numbers of cats are in need of adoption and care. A cat owner who no longer wants the cat, or is no longer able to care for a cat, may drop the cat off at a shelter or simply abandon it. Overcrowding in shelters, along with too few adoptive families for the cats, leads to many wonderful pets having to be euthanized. Abandoned cats fend for themselves and breed in the wild, forming colonies of feral cats. Feral cats have such a difficult existence that they typically only live an average of two years, whereas domestic cats can live an average of twelve years with proper care. Organizations exist that can catch and tame feral kittens, and then place them in a home, but adult ferals can rarely be socialized to trust humans. Meanwhile, many prospective cat owners choose to purchase a kitten from a pet store or breeder, and may not know that even purebred cats and kittens are often available for adoption.

Once someone is ready for the responsibility of caring for a cat, adoption can be an incredibly rewarding decision. Adoption benefits cats, owners, and society alike. Adopting a cat is typically much less expensive than purchasing one. Shelters often have a wide selection of very sweet, friendly cats and kittens, including purebreds. Adoptive owners enjoy bonding with their pets, and have the extra satisfaction of knowing they have rescued a wonderful companion from a hard existence. Every cat adopted means one less cat has to be euthanized. Every kitten purchased new results in one less opportunity for adoption to take place. If you are ready for a pet cat, please consider adoption!
