Animal ID: 16-05-23-00846Henry (male)

Domestic Cat    Age: Adult

Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

Henry (about 7 years old as of April, 2016) is a neutered male brown tabby and white short-haired cat. Henry was fixed through our trap- neuter-return program back in 2010 and went back to live with his colony. Over the years he grew more and more friendly, but he also ran into more and more trouble. He kept getting injured and his caretaker even saw him approach mean neighbor kids who would shoot BBs at him. Finally in 2016 he got a bad wound on his neck and we decided he just wasn't safe living outside anymore. He makes a great indoor cat; he is very loving, he gives unlimited headbutts, he talks all the time in his very distinctive raspy ... (Read More)voice, and he is a big fan of cheek scratches and belly rubs. The only thing he doesn't care much for is being held, but to his credit he is a very big and it's difficult to hold him anyway! He is also very silly, he loves to try and steal all sorts of people foods and still plays like a kitten. He loves racing around the house with his 1 year old foster brother Duce. He gets along well with other cats (although he might butt heads with a very dominant cat, no one has really challenged him yet and he is very confident) and we aren't sure how he would adapt to living with a dog after living so many years outside. Rescue Me ID: 16-05-23-00823Nubs (male)

Domestic Cat    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good w/ Most Cats, Not Good w/ Dogs, Good w/ Adults (Not Kids)
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current, FIV

Nubs is shy, loving, talkative and very cat-friendly, three-year-old, golden-eyed male buff tabby cat who has no tail looking for a loving guardian. This gorgeous cat lets you hold and snuggle him, and loves to be combed and brushed. While he's not much of a lap cat, he will seek out your affection with people and other cats. Once he's acclimated, he's perfectly relaxed in the home. Nubs was rescued in the East Lawndale neighborhood where he was thought to be a feral. A feline lover fed him for a year outside before realizing that he wanted to follow her into her home. She has been fostering him inside every since. Nubs has all his ... (Read More)claws but is very gentle with them. He's not a scratcher. He is afraid of loud noises, so he's looking for a quiet home without small children, and without dogs '| although he loves cats! He is healthy, de-wormed, neutered, up-to-date on rabies and distemper vaccinations, micro-chipped, and virus-tested positive for the FIV virus. He can live with other friendly cats as he's a lover, not a fighter. FIV is only transferred through deep bite wounds. His adoption fee of $75 benefits rescued cats. To meet and possibly adopt Nubs please contact his foster mom Roni at roninakulski@gmail.com or 312-282-8699. He is being fostered in the East Lawndale neighborhood of Chicago. (Less)

Domestic Cat    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Cats, Good with Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Maybelle is an approximately 1 year old (as of May 2016) petite brown tabby female. She was found outside as a stray, but is so friendly we know she had a home at some point. She is desperate for human attention and enjoys being pet and itched. She is a bit catty when meeting new cats but with a slow introduction would do fine in a home with other cats. She has not yet been dog tested. She is hanging out at a vet's office waiting for the right person to come through the door. Could that be you?

Domestic Cat    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs
Personality: Average Energy, Very Dominant
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current, Aggressive

This is Catsby, aka Cat. He will be three years old in September. He is declawed in the front and playful. He is very loving to our immediate family and dog. However, is aggressive with all outsiders and guests we have in the house. This includes extended family members that are over weekly. We are expecting our first baby in the fall and with the nanny and family members over often we decided we should try to find him a home that may be a better fit. I think he would do well in a house with low outside activity. He doesn't seem to have a problem with dogs but I have not seen him around other cats. We hope we can find him a loving home ... Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Rachel (about 8 months old as of 4/24) is a spayed female black and white tuxedo short haired kitten. Rachel was born in foster care to one of the most feral and overprotective mother cats we've ever seen. She would hiss, growl, and slap any time any one went near her babies so her poor kittens weren't able to be handled much and when they did they had the added trauma of their mom being super upset and the people having racing hearts from narrowly escaping doom to get a hold of them. Unfortunately Rachel put the most stock in her paranoid mother's reactions to people and is still a very shy, nervous cat who hides a lot and doesn't really ... (Read More)relax when being petted or held. We're hopeful that with time, patience, and especially in a quiet home with a family who have time to work to earn her trust she will come out of her shell more. She gets along great with other cats but has never lived with dogs. We think she would do best in a home without the added stress of a loud dog or young children. (Less)

Animal ID: 16-05-09-00753Walker (male)

Domestic Cat    Age: Kitten

Compatibility: Good w/ Most Cats, Good w/ Most Dogs, Good w/ Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

Walker (about 11 months old as of 5/8) is a neutered male brown tabby and white shorthaired kitten. Walker and his brothers were found outside semi-feral at about 4 months old, about twice as old as we like to get kittens in for taming, but they were such beautiful boys and gentle enough that we thought we should give them a try. After several months Walker was coming around the most slowly, so we moved him on his own to a new foster home to see if some more one on one attention could help him. It has made a huge improvement; now he is a super talkative, affectionate guy who wants to be with his foster mom most of the time and will come by ... (Read More)for hourly check-ins when she is doing something in another room. He even plays fetch every day! Because he has been more shy in the past and sometimes still gets startled by too many people walking around him we think Walker will do better in home with no small kids living there. He likes cuddling with other cats and gets along great with alpha cats or lazy, relaxed cats, but nervous cats set him off and he goes a little wacky teasing them, so we'd like him to go with either confident kitties or as an only cat with people home a lot to play with him and wear him out. He got along great with his one foster family's cat friendly lap dog, but would probably have a hard time adjusting to a big hyper dog for the same reasons of just being nervous around too much commotion.     Bernie (about 3-5 years old as of May, 2016) is a neutered male grey short haired cat. Bernie was part of a colony of stray and feral cats but played hard to get and took over a year to actually trap. He was often seen with a kitten friend in tow so his caretaker assumed he was a doting mama cat and was very surprised to pick up a burly neutered tom cat from the vet! Needless to say, Bernie likes other cats. He is submissive which helps him get along with other cats, even dominant cats. Bernie is extremely friendly and outgoing. He absolutely loves to be pet and will dance, bash his head into things, and get so happy he starts drooling. If ... (Read More)you are sitting on the couch he prefers to sit next to you. Meow Meow greets his foster family at the door with meows and waits for them to pet him. It took him a few weeks to warm up to them, but once he did '| he was in love. He is still very shy with strangers but gets better with time. He loves tossing little stuffed cat toys up in the air and running after them. He is frightened by sudden hand movements so stick toys and feather wands, etc., are out of the question. He enjoys catnip, treats and the laser pointer. He will do best in a quiet home with patient feline-lovers as he will counter surf if food is left out! Meow is very healthy, de-wormed, neutered, up-to-date on vaccines, virus tested positive for FIV which is spread through bite wounds to other cats so he'll be fine on his own or with other playful non-aggressive cats. Animal ID: 16042600169Roxy (female)

Siamese    Age: Adult

Compatibility: Not Good w/ Other Cats, Not Good w/ Dogs, Good w/ Adults (Not Kids)
Personality: Average Energy, Somewhat Dominant
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Roxy is a sassy and sweet girl that I have cared for since she was 3 months old. She is incredibly smart and curious, and loves to cuddle...on her terms, of course! It may take her a minute to warm up to new people, but once she does, she's very loving and loyal. She also likes to be in the mix with whatever the current activity is...whether that be sitting next to you on the couch watching a movie or eating from her food dish while you sit at the dinner table! I love her dearly and am heartbroken to let her go, but want her to receive the attention she deserves. I recently went through a major life change with my living situation and ... (Read More)career, and with another potential upcoming move (the second in 8 months) I just can't dedicate the time to Roxy that she needs. I would ideally like to see her in a home where she would receive a lot of love and attention, and where her new owner(s) would be able to dedicate time to being around her at her new home. Roxy is very afraid of car travel, which would need to be kept to an absolute minimum. I will take my time searching high and low until the right 'fit' for her new home is found! Roxy has experience being around 2 other dogs, but she is MUCH happier when she is the solo pet. She does not get along with other cats whatsoever. She has no experience being around small children. She is an indoor cat and does have all her claws, but she knows when to be gentle with her paws! Roxy is very good about going potty in her liter box. Her eyes are absolutely beautiful and bright blue, and she is very vocal...all classic Siamese traits! Roxy has a lot of energy and life in her, even though she loves her afternoon naps and uninterrupted 'sunbathing' as you can see in her photo! She does not require a ton of high-maintenance care, but she DOES require love and attention. The adoption fee will be donated back to Rescue Me to aid in the assistance of other pets in need of a new home. Please contact me for more details on Roxy and how to meet this special kitty! (Less)

My name is Blackie! Breed: Domestic Shorthair Color: Black Age: Senior Sex: Female Hair: Short Important Note Blackie is best friends with Dorothy. Please adopt both of them so they can stay together! Blackie's Info... I am already spayed, up to date with shots, not good with kids, not good with dogs, and not good with cats. Blackie's Story... If ever there were two cats purrfectly matched to each other, it's Dorothy and Blackie. They are the Yin to each other's Yang. Dorothy is pure white, with one blue and one gold eye. She is the ultimate lap cat. As beautiful inside as she is outside. Blackie is the color of black velvet, with a ... (Read More)soft, silky coat to match. She is also very loving and a beautiful girl. Black is more playful, while Dorothy is more of the cuddle bunny type (probably because she looks a bit like a bunny!) Both cats are a little older at 12 and 11 years, but very healthy. Cats can live to be 20 or older, so these sweet girls have a lot of love and companionship yet to offer. Dorothy: Loves to be petted and cuddle in your lap. Has gorgeous odd-colored eyes, one blue - one gold. Likes to keep Blackie company. Likes to ride in the car. Will tell you when it's time for dinner! Blackie: Likes to play and bat at balls Loves her treats Likes to nap during the day Likes to play in the evening Has been known to chase her own tail! Dorothy and Blackie are being rehomed by their owner, who loves them both very much. She is devastated to have to make this very difficult decision to find the girls a new home, but her circumstances have changed dramatically, and she simply cannot give the girls the time, love, care and attention they both need and deserve. Long work hours and lots of travel have made things very difficult for the kitties. The perfect home for Dorothy and Blackie will be a quiet one where there are no other pets - or a very cat-friendly dog. They are OK spending some time on their own during the day, but please come home and spend time with them after work and on the weekends. These girls are very clean, very well behaved and a joy to own. Please offer them the home they deserve. They are sure to leave tiny black and white paw prints on your heart. To find out more about Dorothy and Blackie, please call Debbie toll free at (888) 720-3322. If you would like to meet the cats in their home, please fill out the request form below. Animal ID: 16-04-07-00136Binx (male)

Domestic Cat    Age: Kitten

Compatibility: Good w/ Most Cats, Good w/ Most Dogs, Good w/ Adults (Not Kids)
Personality: Average Energy, Submissive
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

Binx (about 9 months old as of 3/24) is a neutered male black short-haired kitten. Binx had an unusual upbringing; we caught him as a very young but very feral kitten who should have been completely tame and loving after a few weeks of being worked with in a crate, but instead he got loose in his foster home and ran wild, taming slowly as he grew very used to living inside quickly but not having to closely interact with people who couldn't catch him. After months inside he has come a long way and loves being petted and likes sitting in laps, but he is still uncomfortable with being picked up and held. Also because of his less than ideal ... (Read More)taming process when he is feeling uncomfortable or overwhelmed he is prone to spooking, and when he spooks he is more quick to bite than most pet cats. For those reasons we would only suggest Binx for a family experienced with semi-feral cats who can pay attention to signs he is getting agitated and just leave him be to settle down and with no little kids around who might forget his boundaries and push them. Otherwise, Binx gets along fine with cats, calm dogs and older kids. (Less)

Domestic Cat    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Cats, Good with Kids and Adults

Bugsy is one special cat! When the Animal Care League was approached by a police officer to help a potentially injured cat, we were happy to assist. What we discovered was a kitty with an old injury to his front leg, who also has tested positive for Feline Immunodeficiency Virus. In Bugsy's personality, we recognized a kitty who absolutely loves being around people, who would gladly purr and chirp all day long to his burgeoning fan club! We sent Bugsy to a board-certified surgeon to evaluate his leg, and it was determined that although his leg is contracted, there is no medical need to consider surgery or amputation. His condition ... (Read More)doesn't effect his mobility, and he's not feeling any discomfort. With regard to his FIV status, FIV is typically a slow virus that affects a cat's immune system over a period of years. Cats with FIV can live long, happy, healthy lives. FIV is not transmissible to humans or other species in your home. Keep Bugsy indoors and free from stress, feed him a high-quality diet, and seek timely vet care for any health issues that come along. We don't know if Bugsy has any experience with dogs, so we can't say for sure how he'd react to having a canine companion.     My name is Lilly and I'm a beautiful 3 year old calico kitty. I'm a sweet, affectionate and very mellow kitty who loves sitting in laps and being petted. I was a bottle-fed kitty so I love being around people and am very quick to purr. I also love getting belly rubs, laying in the sun, and watching birds through the window. Did I mention that I really love belly rubs? I am looking for a very special owner who has a big heart and who can love me even though I'm not perfect. Personality: Low Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

Kate and Che, are a bonded pair of very shy tabby cats looking for a loving guardian. Found living together in a barn, Kate and Che were rescued and have adapted beautifully and appreciatively to the warmth and relaxation of indoor condo life. They are the best of friends often found snuggling or nesting together in their foster home. While they are not necessarily snuggly with humans, they are looking for someone who will enjoy their company without wanting huggable companion felines. Che is a five-year-old hunk of a long, sleek, male tabby with enormous soulful eyes and a big presence who loves to lounge on the sofa or hang out on the ... (Read More)cat tree. He has a super-mellow nature, and avoids confrontation from other cats. He's really just a big teddy bear that wants nothing more than a peaceful life. He loves food; whenever he hears a can being opened in the morning and evening, he pads to the kitchen and hangs out patiently by the door to make sure he's not forgotten. Kate is a 11-year-old petite female tabby with an endearing pixie face and the cutest white socks. Kate is coming out of her shell more each day and likes to explore her surroundings. She enjoys hanging out on the sofa grooming Che; she's a cougar! I understand from their foster mom that when an annoying photographer is not around, they are completely relaxed and happy. Here is a video showing how relaxed and happy they are in their foster home: https://youtu.be/Y8SSZpcP0wg These two are well-mannered in the home, use their litter box and scratching posts like good kitties. They get along with other felines in the home. And, while they are not currently living with dogs, they'd probably be fine with a dog that didn't chase them. Kate and Che are not at all aggressive with people, or with other cats. When nervous, they retreat or hide. They are neutered/spayed, up-to-date on vaccines, micro-chipped and virus-tested. Kate had a dental and only has three teeth left. Their adoption fee of $75 as a pair benefits the rescued pets of Azrael's Place. Animal ID: 16-01-23-00283Elm (male)

Domestic Cat    Age: Young Kitten

Compatibility: Good w/ Most Cats, Good w/ Most Dogs, Good w/ Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current, FIV

Elm (about 5 months old as of 1/21) is a neutered male grey short-haired kitten. Elm and his family of kitten siblings plus a few adults just suddenly showed up and completely overwhelmed one of our small backyard colonies in Zion. We got everyone trapped and took the kittens in to foster even though they were already 3 months old, older than we like to get them in to be tamed. Because of the late start, Elm will probably always be a more cautious cat, but in just a few weeks he has grown from a very shy kitten to one who cries to be picked up and loves butt scratches! He gets along great with other cats and is used to a big dog and one big ... (Read More)noisy bird! He will probably do better with at least one other young playful animal companion to keep him company. Elm tested positive for antibodies to FIV, a slow acting virus that can cause mild to moderate immune impairment. Kittens are sometimes able to completely fight off the disease, so he will need to be tested again when he is older to confirm. He has been taking anti-viral medication and the vet says he's a very healthy kitten. He will be retested by our organization at 6 months of age. If he is FIV positive it is contagious to other cats but only through deep bite wounds, something not likely to happen given a slow introduction, so we will be happy to adopt him to an FIV negative cat family as long as they will be cautious and patient integrating him to their home. Most cats with FIV live to be seniors and pass away from common old age conditions, so it doesn't mean he won't have a long, happy life! Adoption fee includes neuter, vaccinations, microchip, parasite treatment, and 2 week health guarantee. (Less)

Hillary (about 4-5 years old as of December, 2015) is a spayed female torbico (a tabby-calico) short haired cat. A volunteer noticed Hillary under a porch a few days in a row with a sparkly rhinestone collar and thought maybe she was someone's lost pet. They knocked on the door of the house and asked the people if they knew anything about the cat hanging around their porch and they said, 'Yeah, that was our cat.' When asked why she was outside now they said it was because she got into some roach poison they put out and it made a patch of hair on her back fall out so they put her outside. Horrified the volunteer asked for permission to ... (Read More)take her and thankfully they agreed. We had her checked out by a vet and they couldn't say with certainty whether the hair that fell out on her back could have been from a chemical burn from roach poison but it is healing so we are not too concerned. She is a perfectly fine cat even with a patch of shorter hair on her back and we really don't understand why her old family rejected her this way. She is a great little cat, friendly with everyone, likes being held, gentle and sweet, and gets along fine with other cats but would probably do well as a single cat, too. We're not sure how she is with dogs but she could probably do okay with a quiet, cat respectful dog. She'd be a great fit for just about any family that would pamper her the way she deserves and not just give her a fancy collar and then throw her out in the cold. Because of her late start in living with humans and perhaps because she was a lonely kitten with no siblings for support she was very scared at first. With time she has warmed up to living among people, but she is still a little uptight and has a hard time totally relaxing around people, especially large groups and strangers. She could do well in a more quiet home where her new family will be patient and understanding with her as she continues ... (Read More)to adjust. Caramel has lived with cats and dogs and gets along fine, but because of her low confidence she will do better with more laid-back or animal-friendly animals like her foster brother Bandit. (Less)

Bandit (about 10 months old as of 3/5) is a neutered male black tuxedo short-haired kitten. Bandit was caught during a mass trapping of more than 30 cats where 2/3 of the colony were kittens 4 months and under. Bandit was one of the 4 month old kittens and was sent on his own to one foster home to be a companion to a lone 4 month old kitten from a different colony. It took him a while to really come out of his shell having had such a late start living with people, but today Bandit is a happy pet kitten. He's not the cuddliest guy who will come force his way into your lap or smother you with affection, but he is very outgoing, loves to ... (Read More)explore, and always comes running for treats. He is clever and playful, maybe too clever and playful to be around small pets (rodents, birds, unsecured fish tanks, etc.) as true to his name he has ways of figuring out how to get into things he shouldn't be able to. In his foster home he gets along great with other cats and a medium sized cat friendly dog (as long as he isn't being chased!) and is even used to sharing space with small humans! (Less)

Domestic Cat    Age: Young Adult

Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

The Blooming of Polly Polly came to me in November of 2012 at the age of 12 weeks as a single orphan. She was a gorgeous solid black cat but extremely frightened. She would have to be cornered in order to touch and hold her. She remained stiff as a board and felt very uncomfortable while being held. It was obvious that she had very little human socializing. I put her in a room with several other kittens her age and a friendly but shy cat. She remained afraid of me and would run from me when I approached. However, she bonded to the other kittens and cat. Slowly, I was able to pet her while she ate. After several months it became apparent that ... (Read More)she would not warm up on her own with my attention, so I took her and Finnegan, who she seemed to like the best, into my office where they would have to be with me quite a bit more. Since it was a much smaller room with lots of hiding places, I think she became more secure. When I fed her and Finnegan, up on a table, she was open to letting me pet her and scratch her. It wasn't long before she would come over to me and sleep under my desk by my feet. I would reach down and pet her. For a couple months it got progressively better and now she does not run and hide when I approach her. She actually flops down and wants me to rub her tummy. She is not scared of me anymore, nor does she run from me. This took time and patience to get her to warm up to me and enjoy my company. Now, she lays by my feet and won't leave me alone until I play with her and pet her. She loves to be scratched and petted now. She might not ever like strangers, but she has grown to trust her personal human (me). Polly has bloomed into a sweet and loving cat. She will need an understanding and patient adult human or two and a quiet home. She gets along great with other cats. (Less)

Thierry is a delightful tortie with 'special needs'. Although she has a left rear leg that is weaker than the others, she will still jump up onto the back of a couch or chair for a nap during the day and evening; it may take a few tries! She is very friendly and enjoys laying on or next to her foster family members and especially likes it when her head and neck are scratched. Because of her rear leg weakness using the litter box can be a challenge at times, but with some small adaptations to the box she is successful. Thierry would love to be your companion and she currently lives and plays with a Maltese dog and 3 other cats.

Paddington was given to me at just one week old. All 4 were sturdy and healthy, but just didn't have a mom. I bottle fed them, and then introduced them to a lactating female named Sunny. Sunny immediately accepted them as her own, even though she had 4 biological babies the same age already. I rotated them so everyone could get their share of the groceries and loving comfort from mom. Sunny had 8 babies! Well, fast forward to December 2014'|. Paddington is the ultimate sweet little girl. Her needs are simple'|..she would love a quiet home with gentle children over 4, possibly a mellow cat or two, (or his mom or sister) a sunny window, and she is in heaven. (Less)

She will immediately rest her head and wait for her head/ears to be scratched. She keeps herself amused and likes people. She rarely interacts with the other kitties. It can become disfiguring, but it is not painful or pruritic. Cats that have underlying allergies that are managed successfully have an excellent prognosis. She has had a couple of flare ups, but is not on continuous medicine. (I have used atopica to clear up the initial outbreak and one cycle since then). Also, early in the year, I thought she had a uti, but it was just inflammation (caused by stress?). The doctor said to give her cosequin for the inflammation. She has not had a reoccurance. (Less)

Compatibility: Not Good with Other Cats, Good with Adults (Not Kids)
Personality: Low Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

Jazz is a great guy who is looking for his forever person or family after being found as a stray wandering around outside in St. Charles. Jazz follows his foster mom around the house and sits in her lap for attention. His hobbies are looking out the window and eating food. He would prefer to be an only-cat; he just seems annoyed by most of the others, with one exception: Charlie, who is also looking for a home. Jazz could be adopted with his friend or he would be happy as an only-cat. He would prefer a quieter home. To our knowledge, he has never been around young children or dogs. Domestic Cat    Age: Senior

Compatibility: Not Good w/ Other Cats, Good w/ Most Dogs, Good w/ Kids and Adults
Personality: Low Energy, Submissive

Daisy is the girl with the beautiful long and silky fur. She was found outside eating what she could find so she is a bit shy and slow to warm up to new people. Once she gets to know you she loves to be held and cuddle and will follow you around the house. She is ok with dogs but is not comfortable around other cats so she would do best being the only pampered furball in the house. She is up to date on her shots and is ready to find a forever home. Domestic Cat    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Cats, Good with Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament

This charming kitty is Binx! Our delightful guy is super affectionate and interested in exploring and watching over all the comings and goings around him! One of his favorite activities is convincing people to stop whatever they're doing to participate in cuddles, and 'making biscuits' with his paws! Binx has tested positive for Feline Immunodeficiency Virus. FIV is a slow virus that affects a cat's immune system over a period of years. Cats with FIV can live long, happy, healthy lives. FIV is not transmissible to humans or other species in your home. Keep Binx indoors and free from stress, feed him a high-quality diet, and seek timely ... Domestic Cat    Age: Kitten

Personality: Average Energy, Submissive
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Ziva (about 1 year old as of 8/3/15) Ziva was picked up with her friendly stray mom over the winter. Unfortunately, Ziva was already 4 months old and pretty wild from growing up out on the streets. Although we knew she would be a challenge, we worked with her because her mom was such a nice cat and little Ziva was already pretty submissive when we cornered her for petting. Now she has grown to love being petted and will even put up with being held for a few minutes (who could resist that fluff?) before squirming because she wants down. Animal ID: 15-05-13-00634Jasper (male)

Domestic Cat    Age: Senior

Personality: Low Energy, Submissive
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current, FIV

Jasper (roughly 10-14 years old as of May, 2015) is a neutered male orange and white shorthaired cat. Jasper was a typical stray tomcat hanging around the Waukegan harbor until a barn owner met him and decided he would be the perfect barn cat to take home. Unfortunately, she had Jasper tested for FIV when he got fixed and when he came back as positive she decided she didn't want to keep him. On the plus side, during his recovery we found out just how sweet he is and realized he was a good candidate for adoption as a pet cat! He's a great little older gentleman. He isn't pushy or in your face begging for love but if you're offering he'll soak ... (Read More)up all the affection he can get like a sponge- give him some cheek scratches and you'll see! He gets along well with other cats and likes to climb up high and watch over all his foster siblings. With his FIV status Jasper would need to be introduced very slowly with new FIV negative cats so they don't fight and risk transferring the virus through bites, but he has shown he is very capable of making friends. His FIV may have caused him some tooth problems as he had to have some teeth removed recently and he is a little drooly from the recovery, but otherwise he seems to be in good health. (Less)

Rex (about 6 years old as of March, 2016) is a neutered male brown tabby short-haired cat. Rex was trapped, neutered, and returned to a feral colony last summer but was very friendly and decided he needed to be inside- he kept trying to run into his caretaker's house and wouldn't take no for an answer. Now Rex is readjusting to life as an indoor pet in his new foster home but is very happy and purrs when petted. Personality: Average Energy, Submissive
Health: Neutered

Rootbeer (about 1 1/2 years old as of May 2016) is a neutered male brown tabby shorthaired kitten. Rootbeer was born outside last October and trapped as a freezing little 10 week old with his sister right before New Year's. Because they were a few weeks older than ideal it has taken them time to gain confidence with people, but Rootbeer loves cheek scratches and has an amazingly loud motor when you get him purring. He's still shy around new people and absolutely hates being held, but every night he can be found sleeping with someone in his foster family. He definitely loves to play with other cats or people, although some days he just keeps ... (Read More)to himself but then again that might change in a quiet home! Because of his lower confidence and because he LOVES other cats so much we think Rootbeer will do best adopted with another cat or kitten to keep him company and bring out his brave side. He is being fostered around cats, dogs, and older kids so he could adjust to a lot of different families, but we think he'd do better with no kids or only older, quieter kids who won't make it hard for this shy boy to settle in.     Petra is a gorgeous, four-year-old, female brown and white classic tabby with golden eyes looking for a loving guardian. Petra was being fed outside and she was very consistent about showing up at the same place and same time every day. My friend told me about what he thought was a pregnant cat. Turned out she is just well-fed! I went to meet her and took her home (in a trap). When I brought her in to get spayed, I found that she had trapped a couple times before ... so she had already been spayed and micro-chipped. So, I got her vaccines up-dated, and had her re-checked for viruses, and treated for fleas and worms. Petra doesn't have ... (Read More)much use for humans. She likes when they keep her well-fed ... she loves her canned food. And she's very neat and tidy and uses her litter box perfectly. She does enjoy the company of other cats and hangs out with them happily in my house ... until I come in the room. And, then she darts back to her cat tree to hide. It's a bit insulting, but I think a patient cat-loving person can bring her around to appreciating humans a bit more. Why would someone take in a semi-feral cat? She'll live longer in the great indoors, she is a good friend to my other cats, and she's a no-bother kind of girl ... clean and neat. And, she's a challenge for those that enjoy socializing shy cats.     Genevieve (about 1 and a half years old as of August, 2015) is a spayed female tortoiseshell short-haired cat. Genevieve was found outside as a ridiculously friendly and outgoing stray. We can only guess at her age and background, but because she was so petite and still so playful we think she was just under 1 year old when we found her and she's still like a big kitten! We also suspect she was raised from very early on as an only cat because she is so open and loving with all people but so terrible at social interactions with other cats. She often gets upset just by the sight of other cats and sometimes throws tantrums around them. ... (Read More)When she does try to make friends she just sneaks up on them and tries to play, roughly, like she never learned the right way to go about it from a mother cat and littermates. She even plays a little too rough with people so we wouldn't recommend her for a family with small children, but for the right family that likes to 'razzle' their cat and isn't phased by play bites she'll be tons of fun! If she's not playing she loves to be cradled like a baby and held or carried around for ages-she is a very attention seeking cat and will probably do best as a spoiled only cat or sharing the spotlight with just one or two other young, playful, and hopefully more submissive cats, like her shy foster friend Sunshine. Domestic Cat    Age: Young Adult

Personality: Average Energy, Submissive
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Sunshine (about 5 years old as of April, 2016) is a spayed female orange with white long-haired cat. Sunshine showed up in one of our feral colonies and had kittens before she could be trapped and fixed. When we caught her and her newborn kittens we were amazed at how easy going she was with us as we checked out her kittens, and baffled when she let one of our volunteers shave off the matted parts of her thick fluffy coat, a grueling process that took 40 minutes and that most friendly cats wouldn't stay calm through. We now know that her subdued behavior was less because she was the best socialized cat in the world and more because she is ... (Read More)sweet and incredibly submissive and puts up no resistance when she feels cornered. She has enjoyed being petted and brushed before but generally prefers to keep a slight distance and be admired from afar. Being such a delicate soul that takes a long time to trust and only comes out when it's quiet and peaceful we think she would do best with a small family without noisy kids running around to overwhelm her. With other cats she generally keeps to herself and is non-confrontational but she has been known to hold her own wrestling with her crazy little foster sister Genevieve who she loves dearly. Sunshine could be a good little sister to an older kitty that wants to be left alone or happily deal with a feisty kitten and anywhere in between.' (Less)

China is a sweet young cat who didn't get fixed young enough and had one litter of three beautiful kittens. We fostered her and her kittens at Spay and Stay's main office where China came out of her shell and really started to enjoy some attention, but she's still shy around strangers and would really do well in a quiet permanent home where she could grow to be comfortable with just a few people and maybe a few other cats. Now that all of her little ones have found homes we hope it's China's chance to find a happy ending!

PIease Read Before Adopting a Cat in Illinois
Cats can make good pets in Illinois if they match your IifestyIe. Domestic Cats have been intriguing companions for humans since ancient times. Worldwide, cats are even more popular than dogs as pets. Sadly, huge numbers of cats are in need of adoption and care. A cat owner who no longer wants the cat, or is no longer able to care for a cat, may drop the cat off at a shelter or simply abandon it. Overcrowding in shelters, along with too few adoptive families for the cats, leads to many wonderful pets having to be euthanized. Abandoned cats fend for themselves and breed in the wild, forming colonies of feral cats. Feral cats have such a difficult existence that they typically only live an average of two years, whereas domestic cats can live an average of twelve years with proper care. Organizations exist that can catch and tame feral kittens, and then place them in a home, but adult ferals can rarely be socialized to trust humans. Meanwhile, many prospective cat owners choose to purchase a kitten from a pet store or breeder, and may not know that even purebred cats and kittens are often available for adoption.

Once someone is ready for the responsibility of caring for a cat, adoption can be an incredibly rewarding decision. Adoption benefits cats, owners, and society alike. Adopting a cat is typically much less expensive than purchasing one. Shelters often have a wide selection of very sweet, friendly cats and kittens, including purebreds. Adoptive owners enjoy bonding with their pets, and have the extra satisfaction of knowing they have rescued a wonderful companion from a hard existence. Every cat adopted means one less cat has to be euthanized. Every kitten purchased new results in one less opportunity for adoption to take place. If you are ready for a pet cat, please consider adoption!

lnteresting Cat Trivia Low-Cost Illinois Spay & Neuter Clinics
All domestic cats are descended from African wild cats. Cats were considered divine in ancient Egypt and are depicted in hieroglyphs and found mummified in the tombs of Pharaohs. The cats in the Broadway show, Cats, were inspired by feral cats in London made famous as T.S. Eliot's Jellicle Cats. Cats were incredibly popular in ancient Rome; Rome may have been spared from plague outbreaks due to its huge population of feral cats keeping the rat population under control. Today, Rome has the largest number of feral cats of any city in the worldabout 300,000 felines! The largest domestic cat ever weighed was about 46 pounds!
