Domestic Cat    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Cats, Good with Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

Stanley (about 2-3 years old as of June, 2016) is a neutered male black medium hair cat. Stanley was rescued as part of our Beach Park trailer park trapping and was one of 16 or more stray cats that had recently been taken into one resident's small trailer. He has a beautiful full fluffy tail. Stanley is a very vocal cat that will seek out attention but does need a bit of time to adjust to new surroundings. Stanley likes to spend his days lounging on the cat tree or cuddled in a bed or on the back of a couch. He loves other cats and has yet to find a cat he doesn't like; he'd love at least one feline brother or sister. We're not sure how he ... (Read More)would handle a dog although other cats from his colony seem to have some experience with them. Stanley would do fine with kids, though he may be easily intimidated by younger children and loud noise. (Less)

Animal ID: 16-06-23-00451Addy (female)

Siamese Mix    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Cats, Good with Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Addy (about 2 years old as of June, 2016) is a spayed female Lynx point Siamese mix short-haired cat. Addy had a litter of kittens under a porch in the spring of 2015. Volunteers were able to trap 4 her kittens, but Addy got upset and disappeared. She returned to the same porch and had 4 more kittens this spring. %A0When she recovered from her spay, she joined her kittens in foster care.%A0Addy is a very friendly girl. She was so over the moon to be back in a house with people that she couldn't do anything but wind around their legs and bash her head into them the first night.%A0 She has settled down and only winds around legs a few times ... (Read More)a day now, but she is still very sweet and affectionate.%A0 She has a little bit of a confidence problem about being held and will sometimes start squirming shortly after you pick her up but is often happy to be cradled for several minutes.%A0 She loves to play and gets quite frisky but is amazingly gentle; she will chew and kick but so softly you can barely feel it, and always with lots of licks.%A0When Addy first came to her foster home she was very happy to see other cats and ran right up to head-bash them as well, but as she started taking care of her little kittens she became very defensive of the kits and wouldn't let other cats near them.%A0 Now that her kittens are growing and more independent she seems to have settled down again and we think she'd be fine with other cats . She handled being around a small cat- friendly dog okay but we're not sure if she has had any real experience living with dogs. (Less)

Domestic Cat    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good with Kids and Adults
Personality: Low Energy, Submissive
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current, FIV

Meow! My name is Buddy and I am looking for a hero! I am only 2yrs old and I am a sweet and calm boy. Unfortunately I am FIV+ which makes me more susceptible to getting sick. Right now I have a case of the eye boogers which is why I'm so squinty in my pictures, otherwise you would see my beautiful sky-blue eyes! Having FIV does not diminish my life expectancy, you just might have to take me to the vet more often. I have been at the shelter a long time and I am getting sad. I love to be petted and brushed and I would be your best friend if you were my hero and came and rescued me.

Meow! My name is Bart. I am a sweet and friendly boy who loves affection. My previously owner dropped me off at the shelter because I was old and my brother Homer was sick. Sadly my brother has since crossed the rainbow bridge. I am very sad at the shelter, I don't get as much attention as the other cats because I am FeLV+ which unfortunately is very contagious to other cats. But I am doing so well, if you met me you would never guess my age and health status! I have SO MUCH love to give to my future human guardian angel, is it you?

Domestic Cat    Age: Kitten

Compatibility: Good with Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current, Leukemia (FeLV)

Colin is a fun, sweet, loving, playful and lovable, 11-month-old, male tabby kitten looking for a loving guardian. Colin walked into a North Lawndale high school in January. Luckily a kind-hearted teacher brought him home so he wouldn't have to go back outside on a zero degree day! All efforts to find his family failed; he wore no tags and wasn't micro-chipped. Colin loves people of all ages - including children and can probably share a home with cat-friendly dogs. He is perfectly litter box trained, and loves a scratching post. He loves all toys, balls and catnip sacks. He even lets you trim his nails. And, when you talk to Colin, he ... (Read More)talks right back. You can practically have a conversation with him. Colin is healthy, neutered, up to date on rabies and distemper vaccines and micro-chipped.     Shadow (about 12 weeks old as of 6/10) is a male black short haired kitten. Shadow and his littermates were born to a stray cat who had befriended a couple in their 90s and decided to start her family under their porch. The kittens were a little older than ideal when we got the call to come trap them, but from having the nice couple feeding them they were at least starting to socialize and have done well in foster care. Shadow is still fairly shy but really loves to cuddle. These kittens are being fostered with other cats and would love to be adopted with another kitten or young, playful cat.     Othello is so sweet and affectionate, and expresses his pleasure by making bread with his paws! He is a handsome guy who's active, playful, and most of all full of love. When Othello arrived as a stray, he had a serious eye infection. The poor guy must have been so uncomfortable, but all he did while we treated him was purr and nuzzle us for love! His eyes have healed, but Othello still has scarring visible that makes his eyes look a little cloudy. Don't let this deter you, though - Othello's heart transcends all that superficial stuff! She'll even nuzzle your face when you've stopped to get that pet motor running again. Strawberry becomes overwhelmed in boisterous, busy spaces, and she'll retreat. If you want to see ... Domestic Cat Mix    Age: Senior

Compatibility: Good with Most Dogs, Good with Adults (Not Kids)
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Spayed, Needs Vaccinations

Cricket has been a fantastic family pet; however, since the addition of children to our home she has begun urinating on rugs in the house. She did this 5 years when we brought home our first son, then the issue stopped after a couple of months. We had her evaluated to rule out any possible medical issues. We just had another child 3 months ago and the issue has begun again. We simply cannot have this issue in our house any longer. She is a great cat and is VERY affectionate. She will curl up in your lap at night and lay there for hours. I almost hate to get up after she's so cozy. I hope that a good family can care for her as we do NOT want ...     Davey is a 1 year old chocolate brown cat (as of May 2016). He is still very petite and is a kitten at heart. He loves human interaction and is content being pet, though he loves to sit on your lap, be picked up, or carried around like a baby. Davey was found as a friendly stray in an established colony in Waukegan. Davey clearly had an indoor home at some point. The first night with his fosters he magically escaped from his locked crate (still went in and out to eat all the food and use the litterbox multiple times), hence the name 'Davey' after 'David Copperfield.'     Sally is a 1-2 year old dilute calico cat. She is extremely friendly and loves human interaction. She likes to be by your side, so you have to be careful not to trip over her as she often will weave in and around your feet. Sally was found as a very friendly stray. In fact the children that found her just picked her up and were playing with her and carrying her all over the yard when the parents reached out to us. Animal ID: 16-05-23-00846Henry (male)

Domestic Cat    Age: Adult

Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

Henry (about 7 years old as of April, 2016) is a neutered male brown tabby and white short-haired cat. Henry was fixed through our trap- neuter-return program back in 2010 and went back to live with his colony. Over the years he grew more and more friendly, but he also ran into more and more trouble. He kept getting injured and his caretaker even saw him approach mean neighbor kids who would shoot BBs at him. Finally in 2016 he got a bad wound on his neck and we decided he just wasn't safe living outside anymore. He makes a great indoor cat; he is very loving, he gives unlimited headbutts, he talks all the time in his very distinctive raspy ... (Read More)voice, and he is a big fan of cheek scratches and belly rubs. The only thing he doesn't care much for is being held, but to his credit he is a very big and it's difficult to hold him anyway! He is also very silly, he loves to try and steal all sorts of people foods and still plays like a kitten. He loves racing around the house with his 1 year old foster brother Duce. He gets along well with other cats (although he might butt heads with a very dominant cat, no one has really challenged him yet and he is very confident) and we aren't sure how he would adapt to living with a dog after living so many years outside.     Nubs is shy, loving, talkative and very cat-friendly, three-year-old, golden-eyed male buff tabby cat who has no tail looking for a loving guardian. This gorgeous cat lets you hold and snuggle him, and loves to be combed and brushed. While he's not much of a lap cat, he will seek out your affection with people and other cats. Once he's acclimated, he's perfectly relaxed in the home. Nubs was rescued in the East Lawndale neighborhood where he was thought to be a feral. A feline lover fed him for a year outside before realizing that he wanted to follow her into her home. She has been fostering him inside every since. Nubs has all his ... (Read More)claws but is very gentle with them. He's not a scratcher. He is afraid of loud noises, so he's looking for a quiet home without small children, and without dogs '| although he loves cats! He is healthy, de-wormed, neutered, up-to-date on rabies and distemper vaccinations, micro-chipped, and virus-tested positive for the FIV virus. He can live with other friendly cats as he's a lover, not a fighter. FIV is only transferred through deep bite wounds. His adoption fee of $75 benefits rescued cats.     Rachel (about 8 months old as of 4/24) is a spayed female black and white tuxedo short haired kitten. Rachel was born in foster care to one of the most feral and overprotective mother cats we've ever seen. She would hiss, growl, and slap any time any one went near her babies so her poor kittens weren't able to be handled much and when they did they had the added trauma of their mom being super upset and the people having racing hearts from narrowly escaping doom to get a hold of them. Animal ID: 16-05-09-00753Walker (male)

Domestic Cat    Age: Kitten

Compatibility: Good w/ Most Cats, Good w/ Most Dogs, Good w/ Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

Walker (about 11 months old as of 5/8) is a neutered male brown tabby and white shorthaired kitten. Walker and his brothers were found outside semi-feral at about 4 months old, about twice as old as we like to get kittens in for taming, but they were such beautiful boys and gentle enough that we thought we should give them a try. After several months Walker was coming around the most slowly, so we moved him on his own to a new foster home to see if some more one on one attention could help him. It has made a huge improvement; now he is a super talkative, affectionate guy who wants to be with his foster mom most of the time and will come by ... (Read More)for hourly check-ins when she is doing something in another room. He even plays fetch every day! Because he has been more shy in the past and sometimes still gets startled by too many people walking around him we think Walker will do better in home with no small kids living there. He likes cuddling with other cats and gets along great with alpha cats or lazy, relaxed cats, but nervous cats set him off and he goes a little wacky teasing them, so we'd like him to go with either confident kitties or as an only cat with people home a lot to play with him and wear him out. He got along great with his one foster family's cat friendly lap dog, but would probably have a hard time adjusting to a big hyper dog for the same reasons of just being nervous around too much commotion. Animal ID: 16-05-09-00746Bernie (male)

Domestic Cat    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Cats, Good with Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Submissive
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

Bernie (about 3-5 years old as of May, 2016) is a neutered male grey short haired cat. Bernie was part of a colony of stray and feral cats but played hard to get and took over a year to actually trap. He was often seen with a kitten friend in tow so his caretaker assumed he was a doting mama cat and was very surprised to pick up a burly neutered tom cat from the vet! Needless to say, Bernie likes other cats. He is submissive which helps him get along with other cats, even dominant cats. Bernie is extremely friendly and outgoing. He absolutely loves to be pet and will dance, bash his head into things, and get so happy he starts drooling. If ... (Read More)you are sitting on the couch he prefers to sit next to you. Even if you aren't petting him he enjoys the companionship. He is always gentle, so he is fine to have kids around. He would prefer a home without dogs or would need a very slow transition period into a home with a dog. (Less)

Domestic Cat    Age: Kitten

Compatibility: Good with Most Cats, Good with Adults (Not Kids)
Personality: Average Energy, Submissive
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

Finn (about 8 months old as of 4/24) is a neutered male black and white tuxedo short haired kitten. Finn was born in foster care to one of the most feral and overprotective mother cats we've ever seen. She would hiss, growl, and slap any time any one went near her babies so her poor kittens weren't able to be handled much and when they did they had the added trauma of their mom being super upset and the people having racing hearts from narrowly escaping doom to get a hold of them. Finn adjusted to life after his crazy mom left a little better than his sister Rachel did. He likes to play with toys with people and will sneak up next to his ... (Read More)foster mom to nap by her if she is being quiet, but he doesn't always like being reached for. When you do get a hold of him and pick him up he hugs on tight and smashes his face against you like a little kid giving a great big bear hug and doesn't seem to want to let go until you are putting him down. He gets along great with other cats but has never lived with dogs. We think he would do best in a home without the added stress of a loud dog or hyper young children. (Less)

Tiger Lily enjoys the company of other cats, dogs and people. She is well-behaved in the home and uses her litter box like a good girl. Tiger Lily was adopted as a tiny kitten. Maine Coon Mix    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Cats, Good with Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current, FIV

Meow Meow is a four-year-old, 15-pound, plush male black Maine Coon-mix with deep purrs, a huge plume of a tail and golden eyes looking for a loving guardian. Meow Meow greets his foster family at the door with meows and waits for them to pet him. It took him a few weeks to warm up to them, but once he did '| he was in love. He is still very shy with strangers but gets better with time. He loves tossing little stuffed cat toys up in the air and running after them. He is pretty energetic; he wrestles and plays with the other playful cats in his foster home. Meow is incredibly snuggly and affectionate. If you're on the couch, he's on the ... (Read More)couch next to you. If you're brushing your teeth, he's impatiently waiting on the bed for you to join him for a snuggle session. He's a big fan of belly and chest rubs. He wouldn't turn down a head scratch either. Meow was found stray in Chicago and can be very nervous and jumpy with loud noises and unexpected movements. He is frightened by sudden hand movements so stick toys and feather wands, etc., are out of the question. He enjoys catnip, treats and the laser pointer. He will do best in a quiet home with patient feline-lovers as he will counter surf if food is left out! Meow is very healthy, de-wormed, neutered, up-to-date on vaccines, virus tested positive for FIV which is spread through bite wounds to other cats so he'll be fine on his own or with other playful non-aggressive cats. He has all his claws. Animal ID: 16042600169Roxy (female)

Siamese    Age: Adult

Compatibility: Not Good w/ Other Cats, Not Good w/ Dogs, Good w/ Adults (Not Kids)
Personality: Average Energy, Somewhat Dominant
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Roxy is a sassy and sweet girl that I have cared for since she was 3 months old. She is incredibly smart and curious, and loves to cuddle...on her terms, of course! It may take her a minute to warm up to new people, but once she does, she's very loving and loyal. She also likes to be in the mix with whatever the current activity is...whether that be sitting next to you on the couch watching a movie or eating from her food dish while you sit at the dinner table! I love her dearly and am heartbroken to let her go, but want her to receive the attention she deserves. I recently went through a major life change with my living situation and ... (Read More)career, and with another potential upcoming move (the second in 8 months) I just can't dedicate the time to Roxy that she needs. I would ideally like to see her in a home where she would receive a lot of love and attention, and where her new owner(s) would be able to dedicate time to being around her at her new home. Roxy is very afraid of car travel, which would need to be kept to an absolute minimum. I will take my time searching high and low until the right 'fit' for her new home is found! Roxy has experience being around 2 other dogs, but she is MUCH happier when she is the solo pet. She does not get along with other cats whatsoever. She has no experience being around small children. She is an indoor cat and does have all her claws, but she knows when to be gentle with her paws! Roxy is very good about going potty in her liter box. Her eyes are absolutely beautiful and bright blue, and she is very vocal...all classic Siamese traits! Roxy has a lot of energy and life in her, even though she loves her afternoon naps and uninterrupted 'sunbathing' as you can see in her photo! She does not require a ton of high-maintenance care, but she DOES require love and attention. The adoption fee will be donated back to Rescue Me to aid in the assistance of other pets in need of a new home. Please contact me for more details on Roxy and how to meet this special kitty! (Less)

However, as time went on, Marissa's family expanded to include more and more members, including a child, and she felt intimidated by the new additions. Marissa is the kind of kitty who prefers to be the star of the show - this cat knows what she wants, and she knows how to ask for it! She would do best in a quiet home with a single person who is looking for a cat who has tons of personality. Domestic Cat    Age: Kitten

Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

Binx (1yr old as of 5/16/16) is a neutered male black short-haired kitten. Binx had an unusual upbringing; we caught him as a very young but very feral kitten who should have been completely tame and loving after a few weeks of being worked with in a crate, but instead he got loose in his foster home and ran wild, taming slowly as he grew very used to living inside quickly but not having to closely interact with people who couldn't catch him. After months inside he has come a long way and loves being petted and likes sitting in laps, but he is still uncomfortable with being picked up and held. Also because of his less than ideal taming ... (Read More)process when he is feeling uncomfortable or overwhelmed he is prone to spooking, and when he spooks he is more quick to bite than most pet cats. For those reasons we would only suggest Binx for a family experienced with semi-feral cats who can pay attention to signs he is getting agitated and just leave him be to settle down and with no little kids around who might forget his boundaries and push them. Otherwise, Binx gets along fine with cats, calm dogs and older kids. (Less)

Domestic Cat    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good with Most Cats, Good with Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament

Bugsy is one special cat! When the Animal Care League was approached by a police officer to help a potentially injured cat, we were happy to assist. What we discovered was a kitty with an old injury to his front leg, who also has tested positive for Feline Immunodeficiency Virus. In Bugsy's personality, we recognized a kitty who absolutely loves being around people, who would gladly purr and chirp all day long to his burgeoning fan club! We sent Bugsy to a board-certified surgeon to evaluate his leg, and it was determined that although his leg is contracted, there is no medical need to consider surgery or amputation. His condition ... (Read More)doesn't effect his mobility, and he's not feeling any discomfort. With regard to his FIV status, FIV is typically a slow virus that affects a cat's immune system over a period of years. Cats with FIV can live long, happy, healthy lives. FIV is not transmissible to humans or other species in your home. Keep Bugsy indoors and free from stress, feed him a high-quality diet, and seek timely vet care for any health issues that come along. We don't know if Bugsy has any experience with dogs, so we can't say for sure how he'd react to having a canine companion. We think this friendly, affable guy would do well in a home with children of any age. (Less)

Felix is a special kitty who is looking for a very special family! Felix has been adopted twice from ACL since he was 5 months old - returned both times because his owners were moving and couldn't take him with.     Kate and Che, are a bonded pair of very shy tabby cats looking for a loving guardian. Found living together in a barn, Kate and Che were rescued and have adapted beautifully and appreciatively to the warmth and relaxation of indoor condo life. They are the best of friends often found snuggling or nesting together in their foster home. He has a super-mellow nature, and avoids confrontation from other cats. He's really just a big teddy bear that wants nothing more than a peaceful life. He loves food; whenever he hears a can being opened in the morning and evening, he pads to the kitchen and hangs out patiently by the door to make sure he's not forgotten. Kate is a 11-year-old petite female tabby with an endearing pixie face and the cutest white socks. Kate is coming out of her shell more each day and likes to explore her surroundings. She enjoys hanging out on the sofa grooming Che; she's a cougar! I understand from their foster mom that when an annoying photographer is not around, they are completely relaxed and happy. Here is a video showing how relaxed and happy they are in their foster home: https://youtu.be/Y8SSZpcP0wg These two are well-mannered in the home, use their litter box and scratching posts like good kitties. They get along with other felines in the home. And, while they are not currently living with dogs, they'd probably be fine with a dog that didn't chase them. Kate and Che are not at all aggressive with people, or with other cats. When nervous, they retreat or hide. They are neutered/spayed, up-to-date on vaccines, micro-chipped and virus-tested. Domestic Cat    Age: Young Kitten

Compatibility: Good w/ Most Cats, Good w/ Most Dogs, Good w/ Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current, FIV

Elm (about 5 months old as of 1/21) is a neutered male grey short-haired kitten. Elm and his family of kitten siblings plus a few adults just suddenly showed up and completely overwhelmed one of our small backyard colonies in Zion. We got everyone trapped and took the kittens in to foster even though they were already 3 months old, older than we like to get them in to be tamed. Because of the late start, Elm will probably always be a more cautious cat, but in just a few weeks he has grown from a very shy kitten to one who cries to be picked up and loves butt scratches! He gets along great with other cats and is used to a big dog and one big ... (Read More)noisy bird! He will probably do better with at least one other young playful animal companion to keep him company. Elm tested positive for antibodies to FIV, a slow acting virus that can cause mild to moderate immune impairment. Kittens are sometimes able to completely fight off the disease, so he will need to be tested again when he is older to confirm. He has been taking anti-viral medication and the vet says he's a very healthy kitten. He will be retested by our organization at 6 months of age. If he is FIV positive it is contagious to other cats but only through deep bite wounds, something not likely to happen given a slow introduction, so we will be happy to adopt him to an FIV negative cat family as long as they will be cautious and patient integrating him to their home. Most cats with FIV live to be seniors and pass away from common old age conditions, so it doesn't mean he won't have a long, happy life!     S'mores (about 1 year old as of December, 2015) is a spayed female brown tabby and white cat. S'mores turned up as a friendly stray near an apartment complex in Gurnee where she bonded with a little girl who started bringing her food and realized how tame she was when S'mores started following her home and begging to be petted. Unfortunately, the girl already had a cat who doesn't like S'mores so her father said she couldn't keep her and now that we have gotten her fixed we're looking for a new home for her.     Atlas is a very handsome, petite and talkative, blue-eyed, seven-year-old, male Chocolate Tabby Point Siamese cat looking for a loving guardian. Atlas loves rolling with his catnip toys, flinging around his mouse toys, or jumping up for a cat wand. He also LOVES playing with super balls. Atlas has a lot of the qualities of the sometimes temperamental Siamese breed ... Sweet and loving most of the time, with a chance of cattitude if he's provoked or challenged. Elwood was one of the oldest kittens caught and understandably he is still a little shy, especially with new people or places.     Winnie (1 yr old as of 5/16/16) is a spayed female white and brown tabby shorthaired kitten. Winnie acts shy at first with new people or in new places, but when she gets comfortable she becomes a little fiend for being petted, purring loudly and bashing her little head into everything. Because of her nervous tendencies we think she'll do better without small noisy kids or big hyper dogs around.     The Blooming of Polly Polly came to me in November of 2012 at the age of 12 weeks as a single orphan. She was a gorgeous solid black cat but extremely frightened. She would have to be cornered in order to touch and hold her. She remained stiff as a board and felt very uncomfortable while being held. It was obvious that she had very little human socializing. I put her in a room with several other kittens her age and a friendly but shy cat. She remained afraid of me and would run from me when I approached. However, she bonded to the other kittens and cat. Slowly, I was able to pet her while she ate. After several months it became apparent that ... (Read More)she would not warm up on her own with my attention, so I took her and Finnegan, who she seemed to like the best, into my office where they would have to be with me quite a bit more. Since it was a much smaller room with lots of hiding places, I think she became more secure. When I fed her and Finnegan, up on a table, she was open to letting me pet her and scratch her. It wasn't long before she would come over to me and sleep under my desk by my feet. I would reach down and pet her. For a couple months it got progressively better and now she does not run and hide when I approach her. She actually flops down and wants me to rub her tummy. She is not scared of me anymore, nor does she run from me. This took time and patience to get her to warm up to me and enjoy my company. Now, she lays by my feet and won't leave me alone until I play with her and pet her. She loves to be scratched and petted now. She might not ever like strangers, but she has grown to trust her personal human (me). Polly has bloomed into a sweet and loving cat. She will need an understanding and patient adult human or two and a quiet home. She gets along great with other cats. (Less)

Sunny immediately accepted them as her own, even though she had 4 biological babies the same age already. I rotated them so everyone could get their share of the groceries and loving comfort from mom. Sunny had 8 babies! Well, fast forward to December 2014'|. Paddington is the ultimate sweet little girl.     Missy is my name, sitting in the sunshine is my game. I am always looking for someplace warm to curl up! I have a beautiful soft coat of white and grey fur, and a wonderful purr motor. I've spent most of my young adult life as a stray (I came to H.E.L.P. as a pregnant girl), but now I love the indoor life! I prefer to be an only cat and I get along with mellow dogs. I probably wouldn't be happy in a home with small children or with lots of noise. A quieter home with a lap to curl up in during the evenings would be perfect for me! With a little love and a little patience to let me get used to my new surroundings, I will be a wonderful ... (Read More)companion for you! I've been spayed, vaccinated, micro-chipped, and front paw declawed (Less)

Animal ID: 9247Lucy (female)

Domestic Cat    Age: Adult

Compatibility: Not Good with Other Cats, Good with Kids and Adults
Personality: Low Energy, Somewhat Dominant
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Lucy is a fabulous female who is fun, beautiful and sassy. (We probably should've named her JLo.) She came to HELP as a young mother who had been abandoned at the pound; now her kittens have moved on and Lucy wants a forever home of her own. She likes people and is talkative. She would probably be lonely if she spent all day, every day alone. She does not like dogs and probably would be happier without other cats, although she tolerates the others at her foster home. Her stunning gray and white fur is not the kind that sheds badly or mats easily, though we do recommend brushing all cats. She could stand to lose a few, but we suggest not ... (Read More)mentioning that to her directly. She is a kitty with a strong, fun personality. There will be an adjustment period in her new home for her to be assured that you are also fabulous and to get used to her new surroundings. Due to her occasional diva-esque behavior due to misunderstanding her desires (You are only human, after all), we recommend older children. Lucy will be a great companion for a person or family who wants a cat they can spoil and adore. She is spayed, up to date on her vaccinations and microchipped (Less)

Domestic Cat    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good w/ Most Cats, Good w/ Most Dogs, Good w/ Kids and Adults
Personality: Low Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Athena is a brown/black tiger/tabby. She came to HELP from the streets of Chicago. While I am sitting on the couch, she will come over and put her front paws on my legs, waiting for me to let her know she can jump on my lap. She will immediately rest her head and wait for her head/ears to be scratched. She keeps herself amused and likes people. She rarely interacts with the other kitties. She was initially thought to have a cleft palate, but it turned out to be an Indolent Ulcer (rodent ulcer or eosinophilic ulcer more commonly known by) which is an ulcerative skin problem that is usually associated with an underlying hypersensitivity, most ... (Read More)often flea allergy but also food allergy and atopy. The lesions they get can begin as small, crater like ulcer with raised margins that most commonly affects the upper lip. It can become disfiguring, but it is not painful or pruritic. Managed by controlling allergies (diet), sometimes systemic antihistamines may reduce clinical symptoms, and sometimes steriods are needed to induce remission. Cats that have underlying allergies that are managed successfully have an excellent prognosis. She has had a couple of flare ups, but is not on continuous medicine. (I have used atopica to clear up the initial outbreak and one cycle since then). Also, early in the year, I thought she had a uti, but it was just inflammation (caused by stress?). The doctor said to give her cosequin for the inflammation. She has not had a reoccurance. (Less)

Astra is very curious and is the first to investigate anything out of the ordinary. She is very playful and is always looking for someone to chase. She likes to have her ears scratched. She started to have seizures when she was around 4-6 months old. It began with her drooling and she would be very tired. The doctors first thought it was sinus issues, but then she had a seizure where she lost her eyesight (it came back by the end of the day). The doctor put her on a combination of Levetiracetam and Phenobarbital. We are not sure what had caused her problem at such a young age, but it did not stop her activities at all and she would act like ... (Read More)a normal cat any other time. Her drooling has stopped (it was occurring multiple times a day). She has not had an episode in over a year. Her appetite is good. Her current medication is as follows: Levetiracetam ($30 bottle) 0.45 ml every 12 hours and Phenobarbital ($12 20-tablets) 1/2 tablet twice daily. The prices are through Walgreens. Since I am signed up with Walgreens prescription program ($20 yearly membership fee), the Levetiracetam is $21 bottle and the Phenobarbital is $10 for 20-tablets). Binx enjoys being with people, but he prefers being petted rather than sitting on a lap. He's kind of a lazybones, and he just wants a place to chill out and watch the world go by.     Ziva (about 1 year old as of 8/3/15) Ziva was picked up with her friendly stray mom over the winter. Unfortunately, Ziva was already 4 months old and pretty wild from growing up out on the streets. Although we knew she would be a challenge, we worked with her because her mom was such a nice cat and little Ziva was already pretty submissive when we cornered her for petting. Domestic Cat    Age: Senior

Personality: Low Energy, Submissive
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current, FIV

Jasper (roughly 10-14 years old as of May, 2015) is a neutered male orange and white shorthaired cat. Jasper was a typical stray tomcat hanging around the Waukegan harbor until a barn owner met him and decided he would be the perfect barn cat to take home. Unfortunately, she had Jasper tested for FIV when he got fixed and when he came back as positive she decided she didn't want to keep him. On the plus side, during his recovery we found out just how sweet he is and realized he was a good candidate for adoption as a pet cat! He's a great little older gentleman. His FIV may have caused him some tooth problems as he had to have some teeth removed recently and he is a little drooly from the recovery, but otherwise he seems to be in good health. (Less)

Rootbeer was born outside last October and trapped as a freezing little 10 week old with his sister right before New Year's. Because they were a few weeks older than ideal it has taken them time to gain confidence with people, but Rootbeer loves cheek scratches and has an amazingly loud motor when you get him purring. Domestic Cat    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good w/ Most Cats, Not Good w/ Dogs, Good w/ Adults (Not Kids)
Personality: Low Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current, Fearful/Anxious

Petra is a gorgeous, four-year-old, female brown and white classic tabby with golden eyes looking for a loving guardian. Petra was being fed outside and she was very consistent about showing up at the same place and same time every day. My friend told me about what he thought was a pregnant cat. Turned out she is just well-fed! I went to meet her and took her home (in a trap). When I brought her in to get spayed, I found that she had trapped a couple times before ... so she had already been spayed and micro-chipped. So, I got her vaccines up-dated, and had her re-checked for viruses, and treated for fleas and worms. Petra doesn't have ... (Read More)much use for humans. She likes when they keep her well-fed ... she loves her canned food. And she's very neat and tidy and uses her litter box perfectly. She does enjoy the company of other cats and hangs out with them happily in my house ... until I come in the room. And, then she darts back to her cat tree to hide. It's a bit insulting, but I think a patient cat-loving person can bring her around to appreciating humans a bit more. Why would someone take in a semi-feral cat? She'll live longer in the great indoors, she is a good friend to my other cats, and she's a no-bother kind of girl ... clean and neat. And, she's a challenge for those that enjoy socializing shy cats. Petra is extremely healthy, spayed, up-to-date on rabies and distemper vaccines, micro-chipped, virus-tested negative and treated with revolution for fleas and worms. To meet and possibly adopt Petra, please contact me directly at sheri@petraits.com or 773-777-2891. She is currently living in the Andersonville neighborhood of Chicago. (Less)

Domestic Cat    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good w/ Most Cats, Not Good w/ Dogs, Good w/ Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Genevieve (about 1 and a half years old as of August, 2015) is a spayed female tortoiseshell short-haired cat. Genevieve was found outside as a ridiculously friendly and outgoing stray. We can only guess at her age and background, but because she was so petite and still so playful we think she was just under 1 year old when we found her and she's still like a big kitten! We also suspect she was raised from very early on as an only cat because she is so open and loving with all people but so terrible at social interactions with other cats. She often gets upset just by the sight of other cats and sometimes throws tantrums around them. ... (Read More)When she does try to make friends she just sneaks up on them and tries to play, roughly, like she never learned the right way to go about it from a mother cat and littermates. She even plays a little too rough with people so we wouldn't recommend her for a family with small children, but for the right family that likes to 'razzle' their cat and isn't phased by play bites she'll be tons of fun! If she's not playing she loves to be cradled like a baby and held or carried around for ages-she is a very attention seeking cat and will probably do best as a spoiled only cat or sharing the spotlight with just one or two other young, playful, and hopefully more submissive cats, like her shy foster friend Sunshine. Personality: Average Energy, Submissive
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Sunshine (about 5 years old as of April, 2016) is a spayed female orange with white long-haired cat. Sunshine showed up in one of our feral colonies and had kittens before she could be trapped and fixed. When we caught her and her newborn kittens we were amazed at how easy going she was with us as we checked out her kittens, and baffled when she let one of our volunteers shave off the matted parts of her thick fluffy coat, a grueling process that took 40 minutes and that most friendly cats wouldn't stay calm through. We now know that her subdued behavior was less because she was the best socialized cat in the world and more because she is ... (Read More)sweet and incredibly submissive and puts up no resistance when she feels cornered. She has enjoyed being petted and brushed before but generally prefers to keep a slight distance and be admired from afar. Being such a delicate soul that takes a long time to trust and only comes out when it's quiet and peaceful we think she would do best with a small family without noisy kids running around to overwhelm her. With other cats she generally keeps to herself and is non-confrontational but she has been known to hold her own wrestling with her crazy little foster sister Genevieve who she loves dearly. Sunshine could be a good little sister to an older kitty that wants to be left alone or happily deal with a feisty kitten and anywhere in between.' (Less)

China is a sweet young cat who didn't get fixed young enough and had one litter of three beautiful kittens. We fostered her and her kittens at Spay and Stay's main office where China came out of her shell and really started to enjoy some attention, but she's still shy around strangers and would really do well in a quiet permanent home where she could grow to be comfortable with just a few people and maybe a few other cats. Now that all of her little ones have found homes we hope it's China's chance to find a happy ending!
