Personality: Low Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current, Abused/Neglected

Aleckite Grey Tabby Domestic Short Hair Male 14 years old 14 lbs. Hi there! My name is Aleckite, but you can call me Al for short. I love people and I'm looking for the purrrfect family to share the rest of my life with. What can I say about myself? People like to describe me as an easy-going, laid-back, mellow kind of guy. I love meeting new people and exploring new places. Since I've got a few years under my belt, I'd like to think I've seen a bit of everything and feel pretty confident that the world is a good place. Other cats? Love 'em! Dogs? Sure, no problem! Oh, and did I mention how much I love people of all ages? My favorite ... (Read More)way to spend the day is snuggled up next to my people. I'll keep your spot on the couch warm, and I promise to greet you at the door when you get home to help you get settled in. I definitely don't mind listening to your day and letting you know I care by putting a paw on your lap. I just love to be close to my family and can't wait to show you the all the best ways to cuddle up together. I should mention that when the good people of PawsCo rescued me, I was in pretty rough condition. One of my eyes was in bad shape, and the doctors knew it was in my best interest to remove it altogether. I know it sounds pretty scary but I'm doing just fine now, and even while I was recovering, I stayed my happy self. I also have been diagnosed with diabetes, which means I need to have my gluclose tested each day and receive insulin if my levels are high. This can all be done in the comfort of home and PawsCo can give you all the details about the process. We hope that as I get healthier and healthier that my diabetes will go away! But that's not something that we can predict quite yet. If you're ready to find the love of your life, email my PawsCo friends at adopt@pawscoadoptions.org or fill out an adoption application today! Rescue Me ID: 17-11-13-00360Honeybear (male)

Domestic Cat    Age: Senior

Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

Hi, do you need a cuddle? Or maybe a lap warmer? A big fluffy kitty cat to sleep with? Well maybe you ought to take a look at me! My name is Honeybear, and although that may seem like a silly name for an 11-old male neutered cat with claws, it actually suits me. I'm definitely a honey of a guy. I love to be petted and scratched and to snuggle up in your lap and sleep with you. I have to admit that I take up a lot of room though. At almost 15 pounds, I'm a (lovable) bear of a cat. I'm even the right color for a bear - at least a panda bear. As you can see from my picture, I'm a black and white tuxedo cat. So you can see why I say that my ... (Read More)name suits me. I'm at Safe Place for Pets because my mom is dying and as much as they love me, none of her daughters - my sisters? - can take me. It's been kind of a rough several weeks for me. First my mom went away, then my two feline brothers, Peach and Two Spots, left. So I've been alone in Mom's house for the past few weeks. It's been lonely! I don't particularly miss my brothers, although I got along ok with Peach. But I really didn't like Two Spots. I think I'd like a home where I'm the only pet. Then I wouldn't have to compete for human attention, which I adore! By the way, I ought to mention that I also like being around children. My mom's daughter used to bring her grandchildren with her when she visited and they were really nice. I sure would love to find a new forever home where I can have someone to love and - more importantly! - someone to love me. I am a cat after all and that means that I'm all about me. ;-) But I promise that if you love me, I'll love you back. It's a win/win situation! Why don't you come meet me and see just how much of a Honeybear I am? You can make an appointment to come by the Safe Place for Pets Welcome Center by emailing them at info@safeplacepets.org or calling [719] 359-0201. Health: Spayed

Millie is a sweet 3 year old girl. We adopted her 5 months ago,but it seems she doesn't get along with our other cat. Based on our observations, she needs to be the only pet in the house. When she is upset she tends to urinate outside the litter box, but it is not related to any medical issues. Millie is full of love and enjoys playing and purrrrring. We are absolutely heartbroken to give her up, but feel she would be happier as the only pet in the house. She is good with kids and adults, it is other cats and dogs that stress her out.

Rescue Me ID: 17-10-16-00168Goofy (female)

American Shorthair Mix    Age: Senior

Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Hello again, Goofy (or sometimes Goofy Girl) here. It hasn't been too long since I first introduced myself after coming to Safe Place for Pets, and I'd like to tell everyone how much has changed since then! The biggest thing is that I'm not hiding anymore. I've moved from one of the upper story kennels down to one one the ground floor so that I can easily come and go as I wish. That is really great, because whenever one of the Safe Place volunteers comes into the room I come out to get some attention and petting. They say that I have blossomed into a sweet, friendly kitty. I was so frightened when I first came to the Welcome Center that no ... (Read More)one realized what a gem I am. They do now! I also like being able to come and go easily because sometimes I get a little overwhelmed by the the other cats and with my kennel on the ground floor it's a snap for me to scuttle back in and take a nap or have a snack. Finally, now that I'm not scared anymore , I can hop up to the top of the kennels whenever I want. It's about 7 feet off the ground and there are several kitty condos up there where I can snuggle up and watch everything that is going on around me. I never would have believed it when I first got here, but the Welcome Center is a pretty neat place to be, especially considering all the loving that I get. It sure beats being alone in my prior mom's house after they took her away! But I'd still rather be in a forever home where I can have that special someone - or a whole family - who I could love and would love me back. Won't you come by the Welcome Center and meet this Goofy Girl? I'm sure you won't regret it. All you have to do is email Safe Place for Pets at info@safeplacepets.org or call 359-0201 to make an appointment. I'd love to see you - and have you see me! Original Bio: Hello there. My name is Goofy, and I'm a 13-year-old female spayed Domestic Shorthair with claws. I'm a pretty little thing with my gray tabby markings separated by large patches of white with a white face and pink nose. I'm a quiet lady and love nothing more than to sit on my mom's lap or sleep next to her in bed. I'm quieter than ever right now because my whole life has been turned upside down and I'm scared and confused by it all. I knew that my prior mom was sick, but then she got really sick and couldn't get up. It was terrible, and before I knew what was happening, men with big boots and coats broke into my house and took Mom away! And then I was alone in the house for weeks. My mom's daughter, who loves me very much, came by to make sure that I had food and water, but I really didn't feel like eating or drinking. I was just too scared and stressed. They tell me that I'm underweight now, and let me tell you, stress and loneliness are no way for a lady to lose weight! Even now that I'm here at the Safe Place for Pets Welcome Center, I'm still frightened and hide under my prior mom's pillow. I like to be petted, but am too shy to come out to get it. I need a forever home where I can feel safe and loved again. I'm tired of being sad and scared. I told you that my name is Goofy, but I've had several names over the course of my life. My brother, who died a number of years ago, and I came to mom from a friend of hers who found us in a garage that was about to be torn down. She wanted good old-fashioned farm names for us, so she named us Harold and Agatha. Well, Harold eventually became Punk. I became Goose because when I was a kitten I used to like to pounce on my prior mom's daughter's feet, and she called my Silly Goose or Goosey Girl. I was Goose until my Mom went away and the lady from Safe Place for Pets made an appointment for me to go to the vet to get my shots (ycch!) and be checked out. When she made the appointment, the lady at the vet's office misunderstood what she said and wrote my name down as Goof. As it turns out, that was for the best, because there used to be another cat at the Welcome Center named Goose. She was there for a long time before she died of kidney disease, and everyone loved her very, very much. It would have been very hard for them to have a different cat with the same name. So, since Goof sounds a lot like Goose, it seemed like a great idea to call me that, or better yet, Goofy or Goofy Girl. I really don't care what you call me as long as you love me! Won't you please come to the Welcome Center to meet me? You can email Safe Place at info@safeplacepets.org or call (719) 359-0201 to make an appointment to come meet me. I hope you do because I really, really need someone all my own who will cherish me. (Less)

Hi, everyone! My name is Cece and I am a new arrival at the Safe Place for Pets Welcome Center, where cats who have lost their families to terminal illness live until new families adopt them. As you can see from my pictures, I am finding my new temporary home to be very comfortable, but I know that I will like a new furever home and family even more! Perhaps once you read about me, you will come by to visit. Let me know you will be stopping by and I will brew a pot of coffee for us to enjoy! Sadly, I lost my mom not too long ago to a terminal illness. She adopted me as a young kitten, but honestly, I think I still am a youngster since I ... (Read More)won't be 2 years old until my birthday in November. I am a very pretty, calico girl, who is spayed and indoor-only. Besides my mom, I lived with a cockapoo and a kitty brother, and I enjoyed their company very much. My mom's son tried to add me to his family, after my siblings were adopted by friends of my mom, but I could not adjust to his German shorthair pointer, a very mellow boy who really was always nice to me. Now I am embarrassed by my bad behavior toward him, but at the time I was just too fearful of his 'giant' size! In my new future home, it would be best if any dogs were no bigger than cockapoo size. Even though I like the company of small dogs and cats, nothing is better than the company of people. I love the attention from the cattery volunteers, and I come running when treats are included. I hope soon I will be able to do the same with you! Contact Safe Place for Pets on the web (safeplacepets.org), by phone (719-359-0201) or email them at info@safeplacepets.org to meet me. I hope to see you soon and I am confident that you won't be disappointed! (Less)

Rescue Me ID: 17-08-14-00381Joni (female)

Domestic Cat    Age: Senior

Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Hi, everyone! My name is Joni, and my dad says I was named for Joan of Arc, because we were both strong and brave girls! I am a spayed, 15-year-old, short hair, tortoise cat, with black, tan, and white accents%BD'%BD|and I also have white feet. Everyone comments on how pretty I am! I was rescued by my prior family as a very young and sickly stray kitty, who showed up on their porch about 7 %BD%BD years ago on a very cold Easter morning. They took me in and helped me become a healthy, happy girl! I have just arrived at the Safe Place for Pets Welcome Center because my dad has gotten very sick over these past few weeks. When dad was ... (Read More)well, I liked being outside in our yard during the day and playing with the neighborhood children but always came in at night to sleep with him. But with so many nurses coming to our home lately to take care of my dad, I was too worried to come inside so I have been staying outside full time. I learned that 'it's a jungle out there,' especially when raccoons came during the night to steal my cat kibble! And it was lonely, since I am very affectionate, love being petted, brushed, and sitting in a warm lap, and having my family's company. The Safe Place for Pets Welcome Center is quite nice and I know I will be warm, safe, and well-fed while I am here. And the caring volunteers will be giving me (and all the other cats living here) lots of love and attention, but I also know this is a temporary home until a new forever family decides I am the one! Come to the Welcome Center to meet me and see for yourself what a great cat I am! Contact Safe Place for Pets by email at info@safeplacepets.com or by phone (719-359-0201)--I just may be that 'one' who is a perfect match for your family! (Less)

Domestic Cat    Age: Young Adult

Tuffy lived as a community cat in Burlington, CO but nobody wanted to provide proper care for him other than an occasional bowl of food, nor would he be allowed to live indoors. A local rescue took him in, and although touchy, was found to be friendly enough to transfer to KKR. Before his arrival, we had to shave away the two inch thick matted pelt and remove lots of burrs that covered much of his body. It took a couple of weeks in foster care and a steroid shot for his skin to recover and a few weeks of reconditioning him to the feeling of his skin being touched before he transformed into a friendly but reserved cat. He is still waiting for ... (Read More)his forever home! He enjoys petting in small amounts, the laser dot is his only toy of interest, loves to laze on pillows or in the most full cat bed, and has the squeakiest meow you have ever heard! He would do best in a home with other cats and polite dogs. (Less)

Annabell was such a good momma, even nursing a litter of abandoned kittens right alongside her own until they could thrive. Almost all her babies have found their happy ending, so now it's her turn! She's a little shy at first, but she loves to be pet and brushed. She has done well with the English Mastiff and the baby, but I think she'd prefer a quiet home where she's the center of attention. Please SHARE and help find this girl the family she deserves!

Greetings, everyone! Eddie and Jesse here to let you know that we have 'broken up' (so to speak). After we settled in at the Welcome Center (where we came to live while waiting for a new forever home since we lost our mom this past spring), we realized that we are no longer a bonded pair. I (Eddie) discovered that I am really a one-cat kind of guy, who wants my person's attention all to myself-I live to be dedicated to her or him and will be a lap cap as soon as that lap is available. And if you have Carl's Jr. chicken strips to eat, please share them with me-they are delicious! I am a 5-year-old, 12-pound, neutered male with shiny black ... (Read More)fur and big gold eyes. I am an indoor-only kitty, who enjoys lying in the sun, playing with orange pipe cleaner circles, and snuggling on a soft blanket when I'm not snuggling with my people. I really like cardboard scratchers, and raisin bran-I would love to share a bowl with you! Let's get together, so we can disprove all those silly black cat superstitions and have a happy life together! *Ask about my reduced adoption donation* Contact Safe Place for Pets on the web (safeplacepets.org) or by phone (719-359-0201)-hope to meet you soon! After we settled in at the Welcome Center (where we came to live while waiting for a new forever home since we lost our mom this past spring), we realized that we are no longer a bonded pair. And I (Jesse) like a very calm and peaceful space, and I also love to give my person head rubs and soulful looks while I listen intently to whatever he or she is saying, which is music to my ears. And I think I have found my new forever home, too! I am currently 'trying out' living with my cat sister from my prior home, Cathy the Maine Coon mix adopted ... Once I get to know you and am confident in my surroundings, I am outgoing and very affectionate.     *Ask about my reduced adoption donation* Hi there! My name is Moxie, Sweet Pea. I am a petite black kitty with a few white hairs on my chest, side and back. I am around 2 years old, spade, and still have my claws. I have had one litter of kittens and was a very good first time, young mother. (Kiko is my daughter, in case you are looking for 2 cats.) I am somewhat reserved and will ask for attention when I need it. I am good with other cats and children but have never met a dog that I liked and used to chase them out of my yard. Rescue Me ID: 16-01-04-00548Eric (male)

Domestic Cat Mix    Age: Senior

Compatibility: Good with Most Cats, Not Good with Dogs
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

Hi there! Remember me? I'm Eric, and I'm baaaaack! I thought that I'd found my forever home, but even though my new mom and I loved each other dearly, we just couldn't make it work. We gave it the best we had for several months but eventually had to call it quits. You see, there were dogs involved. And as much as I tried, I just couldn't adjust. And since Safe Place for Pets will always take back an adopted pet if things don't work out, here I am again. For those of you who don't know me, I am a twelve-year-old, mostly gray, male neutered domestic shorthair with claws. Is that a mouthful or what? I am a handsome fellow, so much that ... (Read More)the Safe Place volunteers have always called me the Tom Selleck of Safe Place. But someone mentioned the other day that Sam Elliott might be appropriate as well. ;-) As far as personality is concerned, I am a great guy. My prior mom called me the most affectionate cat that she has ever known. I'm not a huge lap cat, but I like to be close and keep you company, especially if you are trying to work! I like to sit at your feet or on the couch with you if you're watching television or reading, and I would be happy to sleep with you. I used to follow Mom around from room to room, telling her exactly what she should be doing and letting her know if she was doing it wrong. I pay particularly close attention at dinner time. That's an important time of the day! I have to say at I am not always sociable. Like most cats, I'm somewhat independent and like my alone time. But that doesn't mean that I'm less of a pal! Even though this try didn't work, I'd still like to find a forever home of my own. The Safe Place volunteers are happy to see me again, but it's kind of bittersweet because everyone loves me and was really happy that I'd found a home. I think I'd better steer away from dogs from here on out, but I've occasionally taken a young male cat under my wing (so to speak) and become good friends with him. So that may be a possibility. I'd really like it if you would come by the Welcome Center in Manitou Springs and meet me. You can make an appointment either by emailing them at info@safeplacepets.org or calling (79) 359-0201. I'll be waiting! (Less)

PIease Read Before Adopting a Cat in Colorado
Cats can make good pets in Colorado if they match your IifestyIe. Domestic Cats have been intriguing companions for humans since ancient times. Worldwide, cats are even more popular than dogs as pets. Sadly, huge numbers of cats are in need of adoption and care. A cat owner who no longer wants the cat, or is no longer able to care for a cat, may drop the cat off at a shelter or simply abandon it. Overcrowding in shelters, along with too few adoptive families for the cats, leads to many wonderful pets having to be euthanized. Abandoned cats fend for themselves and breed in the wild, forming colonies of feral cats. Feral cats have such a difficult existence that they typically only live an average of two years, whereas domestic cats can live an average of twelve years with proper care. Organizations exist that can catch and tame feral kittens, and then place them in a home, but adult ferals can rarely be socialized to trust humans. Meanwhile, many prospective cat owners choose to purchase a kitten from a pet store or breeder, and may not know that even purebred cats and kittens are often available for adoption.

Once someone is ready for the responsibility of caring for a cat, adoption can be an incredibly rewarding decision. Adoption benefits cats, owners, and society alike. Adopting a cat is typically much less expensive than purchasing one. Shelters often have a wide selection of very sweet, friendly cats and kittens, including purebreds. Adoptive owners enjoy bonding with their pets, and have the extra satisfaction of knowing they have rescued a wonderful companion from a hard existence. Every cat adopted means one less cat has to be euthanized. Every kitten purchased new results in one less opportunity for adoption to take place. If you are ready for a pet cat, please consider adoption!

All domestic cats are descended from African wild cats. The cats in the Broadway show, Cats, were inspired by feral cats in London made famous as T.S. Eliot's Jellicle Cats. The largest domestic cat ever weighed was about 46 pounds!
