Rescue Me ID: 18-04-20-00165Missy (female)

Domestic Cat    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good w/ Most Cats, Good w/ Most Dogs, Good w/ Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Missy is a real sweetheart and a cute young tabby. She likes attention and has a playful kitten side too. She could learn to get along with a courteous dog if acclimated properly. She takes to other cats with her sweet docile demeanor. She and her 'roommate' Shadow get along well and if you wanted a duo we would give you an adoption special. However, we are looking for the right family for Missy with or without Shadow and she will make a great forever feline friend. Adoption Fee: $100

Rescue Me ID: 18-04-19-00261Hunter (male)

Maine Coon    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Not Good w/ Other Cats, Good w/ Most Dogs, Good w/ Kids and Adults
Personality: High Energy, Somewhat Dominant
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

Hunter was a barn kitty most of his life until now. We believe him to be a Maine Coone due to his big black maine. The 'owner' knew he was a lost stray and seemed out of place and belonged in a home and they were at their max. He hunted and brought prizes as the people who owned the barn put it all the time. He was a master of his craft, but he's not objecting to regular kitty food and indoor living. His teeth paid the price from all that hunting so he had his teeth cleaned and 10 extracted, otherwise he is a healthy friendly cutie. Adoption Fee: $150.     Big Chris came from a high kill shelter in Louisiana. He can't get enough attention. He is a high energy cat and loves to play.     Shadow is a real beautiful sweetheart. She hopes she gets lots of petting and love. She would do awesome as a companion cat to people and other cats. She would also do great as the spoiled queen. Shadow could learn to accept a courteous dog if acclimated properly. She gets along great with Missy and there is a special if you adopted both. However this profile is to get Shadow a home with or without Missy. She is an all around great cat. Adoption Fee: $50

American Shorthair    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good w/ Most Cats, Good w/ Most Dogs, Good w/ Kids and Adults
Personality: High Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Dany (Daenerys) is a tortoise shell. She loves to be around people and is very talkative and friendly. She does not mind being held most times but prefers to follow you around at her own pace. She loves to lay on still, calm laps. She is very social; she can be shy sometimes but usually loves to be where the action is! She loves to explore outside and play with toys inside. She is very loyal to her home - once she becomes accommodated to her people and her territory she will happily hunt and play outside during the day, if permitted, and will be waiting for you when you come home. She is skittish with dogs at first but quickly grows to ... (Read More)love them. She will even play with them! She will tolerate any cat if introduced slowly. She is a wonderful cat; my girlfriend's and my allergies simply cannot handle a cat anymore! (Less)

Rescue Me ID: 18-04-15-00075Minnie (female)

Persian    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Not Good w/ Other Cats, Not Good w/ Dogs, Good w/ Adults (Not Kids)
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Spayed, Needs Vaccinations

Minnie is the most beautiful Persian kitty. She is about 4 years old. We adopted her 3 years ago because she was unhappy in her current home with 3 dogs and 3 kids. We have since had 2 babies and she is not impressed. She is very sweet and insists on always being in whatever room we are in, however does not demand much attention. She just wants the companionship. The kids stress her out, whenever the baby cries she paces frantically. She is a very good kitty and needs a home that does not have any kids to stress her out. She would be such a good pet for someone who just wants a single pet. We currently have another kitty and she is very ... (Read More)bossy with him and tends to stress him out. I guess you could say she is the queen bee. She is declawed. We have her groomed into a lion cut about every 6 months. She currently has a fresh cut. We hope to find a quiet loving stress free home for her. (Less)

Ragdoll    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Not Good with Dogs, Good with Adults (Not Kids)
Personality: Average Energy, Very Submissive
Health: Neutered, Needs Vaccinations

My kitty needs a new home. He is very sweet and loves to be petted. He has the typical ragdoll personality. A change in my circumstances has made it to where I am hardly ever home. He is home alone a lot and deserves to be in a home that can offer him more attention and love. He does not want to be around dogs and small children. He would do best being the only pet in your home where you could offer lots of love and attention.

Rescue Me ID: 18-04-09-00178Nellie (female)

American Shorthair Mix    Age: Young Adult

Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Hi there, how are you? My name is Nellie, and I am fine, thank you very much! I am a 4 to 6 year-old female spayed domestic shorthair with claws. As you can see from my pictures, I am a warm brown tabby with pretty green eyes. Even though I am called a shorthair, my beautiful coat is so soft and plush that the Safe Place volunteer said that it felt like bunny fur. I came to Safe Place for Pets because my mom just died. I have been really lucky in a lot of ways. First, my mom had a really great pet sitting company (Lucky Pet Home Pet Care) taking good care of me even before she passed, and second, because my human sibling was kind enough to ... (Read More)let me stay in our apartment and have them continue taking care of me even after that. As if that weren't enough, I have been lucky enough to be fostered by a wonderful couple who have loved me as if I were their own. They tell me that Safe Place for Pets is in the process of moving and that all their cats are in foster now. My foster parents tell me that I can stay with them until I find a new forever home! My name will always be Nellie, but I guess you could also call me Lucky! As you can probably tell, I am an outgoing lady. My foster mom says that I would do well as a mascot cat in a small store because I love everybody and am so adaptable. But I really think I'd be happier to be part of a family. I like children and would be perfectly happy to live with them. I've never been around other cats or dogs, so I can't say how I'd be around them, but I might be fine, who knows? I love to be petted - especially on my tummy! - and brushed. I like lap time, but am not pushy about it. If I realize that you're going to be sitting for a while though, I am likely to come up and keep you company for as long as you like. I've never really learned to play, although I'd be willing to be taught! My absolute favorite place to be is on top of my enormous cat tree, especially if it happens to be in front of a window. My prior mom even bought a little heating pad that fits in one of the cubbies. I'm so happy that I get to keep it! I'm really good about using it instead of furniture to sharpen my claws. I'd sure like to find a forever home of my own. My foster parents love me and would be happy to adopt me themselves, but they like to travel and don't think it would be fair to leave me alone for long periods of time. Isn't it wonderful of them to be so considerate of me? If you think that I might be a perfect addition to your family, why don't you give Safe Place for Pets a call at 719-359-0201 or email them at info@safeplacepets.org and arrange to meet me? I know you'd love me. Everyone does - I'm lucky that way. (Less)

Rescue Me ID: 18-03-19-00274Kitters (female)

Burmese Mix    Age: Young Adult

Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Hello, everyone! Kitters and Pumpkin here to introduce ourselves! We are young, bonded, housemate sisters, and we truly are each other's best friend unless our person is near, and then we are all best friends! Our mom recently passed away and family members were not able to keep us, which is why we are living at the Safe Place for Pets Welcome Center until we meet our purrfect match and move into a new forever home. Both of us came to live with our prior mom as very young kittens. My mom's friends gave us to her as gifts-how great that was for all of us! I, Kitters, am almost exactly 1 year older than Pumpkin-my birthday is 6/15/15 and her ... (Read More)birthday is 6/2/16. We are both spayed, have our claws, and are indoor-only. I am Blue Burmese-ish, with a very pretty, blue-gray coat and gold eyes, while Pumpkin is a very attractive long-haired calico. I am the wary and reserved one, who takes a while to feel confident to be affectionate and attentive toward new people and new settings. At the Welcome Center I am depending on my baby sister to check everything out for me. She gives me updates when we snuggle together in one of our kennel bedroom cubbies. I was very playful and affectionate in my prior home, and I will be that way again soon. I am looking forward to a new forever home where Pumpkin and I can play chase in the evenings and then curl up next to our new person for a good night's sleep. Pumpkin, here, to tell you a little more about myself, so listen up! I am in total agreement with my big sister, Kitters, especially about being very attractive. I am also quite the talker and like to be your helper. If you are at your desk doing paperwork, I will be right there to lend a hand. I am the typical calico cat, with my curious and outgoing personality, and I am very affectionate, too-I just love giving head rubs. I like to spend time with Kitters and our person and am quite the snuggler with both. Besides playing chase with Kitters, both of us like playing with string, yarn and that wiggly laser-light dot. We were very blessed to have been loved so much by our prior mom, and then by her son and daughter-in-law. They took us to Hamlett Spay and Neuter Clinic for check-ups to confirm that we are very healthy girls before we moved to the SP4P Welcome Center. We are looking forward to our new forever family. If it includes a smallish dog, that will be okay with us, since we lived quite peaceably with our prior mom's miniature Schnauzer. Do give us some consideration if you are wanting to add young, bonded kitty girls to your family. Contact Safe Place for Pets by email at info@safeplacepets.org or call 719-359-0201 to visit us anytime-we look forward to meeting you! (Less)

Eloise Brown Tabby Female 10 years old 9 lbs. I was meowing with my foster mom about what I should be sure to tell you in this brief autobiography of mine, and she said I needed to be sure to let you know that I, Eloise, am awesome. 'Awesome?' I asked. 'Really?' She said, 'Yup.' She says that my funny way of begging for cheese, my big personality, my mellow nature, and my intense desire for human companionship combined with my unsurpassed ability to cuddle makes me awesome. Wow! That's so nice! She also says I should be sure to let you know that I am wiser than other cats, which is her nice way of saying that I'm older than most cats. ... (Read More)I think she means that, as an older and wiser feline, I'd enjoy a more laid-back home where I can just enjoy my favorite humans and hang out in my favorite sunny spot in the home! I also live really well with other cat friends and even do well with calm dogs (energetic dogs make me feel nervous so I'm best with dogs that will co-exist with me rather than try to get me to play!) I take a little bit of time to get to know people but once you pass the Eloise Test, you are in! It has also been said that I've grown tired of doing my hair myself anymore, but I mean who doesn't love a spa day?! Yay! Take me to the groomer instead! I also need to share with you that I was recently diagnosed with cancer. The good news is that it seems to be a slow moving cancer but it is not curable. I'm not in pain and I still have so much love and affection to give to a forever family! I do need to be on two different medications (totaling $30/month) and visit the vet every 6 months for a routine check up and bloodwork. My PawsCo friends can get you up to speed on all that. I was adopted 2 years ago, but it turned out that my new mom was unable to take care of me, so through no fault of my own, here I am again, once more looking for my forever home. When I have had enough cuddle time I will let you know in no uncertain terms that I 'vant to be left alone!' I do like cuddling up with you in bed at night though. S I don't particularly like dogs, especially not big ones, and am not really keen on other cats either, so I would be happier in a house with no other pets. Rescue Me ID: 18-02-12-00406Oscar (male)

American Shorthair Mix    Age: Senior

Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

Hello, everyone! My name is Oscar and I would like to introduce myself. I am a very handsome all-gray, neutered cat, with gold eyes, and I weigh about 12 pounds. I just arrived at the Safe Place for Pets Welcome Center. Even though it is comfortable, and the room service and housekeeping staff (aka cattery volunteer team) is great, my being here means that I need a new furever home. I sadly lost my dad last fall, and his daughter and son-in-law were not able to keep me because of the daughter's cat allergy. All of us were very disappointed, but they did the next best thing to help me find that new special someone by bringing me here. When ... (Read More)my dad and I were still together, I enjoyed being outside during the day and visiting with the neighbors. I always came inside at night and really loved just being close to my dad and sitting in his lap as much as possible. I am a very playful guy, even for a 13-year-old, and really get excited about chasing strings, shoelaces, and cords'|look out if you have drawstring cords on a sweatshirt hood! At the end of the day, I liked to sleep curled up on the bed close to my dad. Since my dad has passed away, I have adjusted quite well to being indoor-only. If there is a window to sit in to watch the world, I'm good. Since I tend to be shy and wary in new situations, I am taking my time settling in at the Welcome Center. So far, I am doing OK with the other cats living there, and I have not had to use my claws or growl vigorously at them, but I have uttered a low rumble to let them know that I am not so sure about them just yet. The cattery volunteers are very nice, and I am looking forward to getting to know them and enjoying their attention. An even better option is to meet you to see if we might be a good fit for each other. You can visit me by calling Safe Place for Pets at 719-359-0201 or submitting a pet inquiry at www.safeplacepets.org. I hope to see you soon! (Less)

Rescue Me ID: 18-01-29-00175Gus-Gus (male)

Domestic Cat    Age: Adult

Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

Hi, my name is Gus-Gus. I am a beautiful 8-year-old male neutered gray domestic medium-long-haired fellow. I am an indoor-only cat, which is absolutely necessary because I have been declawed. Wouldn't it be horrible if I were outside and something attacked me? I'd be helpless! To tell you something about myself, unlike most cats at Safe Place for Pets, I am not a Colorado native. Yes, I have to admit that I'm another transplant. I really hope you won't hold that against me though. I came here from sunny California two years ago with my prior mom. I was with her ever since I was a kitten, when she adopted me after someone abandoned me at ... (Read More)the veterinary office where she worked. Don't ask me how someone could do that; I'll never know. Anyway, she named me Gus-Gus, maybe because I was small and gray. I'm told that Gus-Gus was the name of a mouse in the Walt Disney movie Cinderella. I'm no small mouse now, I can tell you that! I'm a strapping 15.14-pound guy, and a few years ago I was over 17 pounds. I guess you could say that I like to eat. The vet put me on a diet - the meany! - so now I've slimmed down some. But you can see from my pictures how handsome I am. As far as my personality goes, I have to say that you have to have some patience with me. After living alone most of my life with my prior mom, I'm not really accustomed to being around people. So it may take me a while to warm up to you. I was with mom's sister-in-law from November until just a few days ago, and it took me until just over a week or so ago to start to really trust her enough to be friendly. She really liked me, especially after that, but she has two other older cats and she didn't think that we'd get along too well. Also, she says that although two cats are fine, three is a bit too much. I'm not really a lap cat, but I do like to sit at your feet once I get to know and trust you. I'm not big on toys either, EXCEPT those feathers on a stick that she dangles in front of me! I love to go after those. As a matter of fact, she's had to replace them a few times because I like to shred them. I also like to sit next to the window and watch the birds and squirrels outside the house. I'd really like to find a new forever home where I could settle in and learn to trust and love somebody again. Do you think you might want to come to the Safe Place Welcome Center In Manitou Springs and meet me? All you have to do is call 719-359-0201 or go to the Safe Place website at safeplacepets.org to make an appointment. As I said, it can take me a while to warm up, but I promise that if you're patient with me you won't regret it! (Less)

Domestic Cat    Age: Adult

Compatibility: Not Good with Other Cats, Good with Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

Mikala aka Mikkigirl is a 9 yr old medium haired grey and white kitty with green eyes. She is very healthy and quite pretty. She is spayed and has had her vaccines. Mikki had been an indoor/outdoor kitty yet got hit by a car and lost her left hind leg a few years back, although you would never know it. She can go outdoors for limited amounts of time with supervision and on a harness with a leash'|never alone or off leash. Too many critters out there. She does like to lounge on an enclosed patio or porch in the warmer weather. She is quite spirited and energetic, runs and enjoys interactive play. Mikki loves affection and is a ... Did I tell you she adores being brushed...and of course snooze? She's a very unique kitty with a good disposition. I am looking for someone to love and care for her and be a good companion. (Less)

Rescue Me ID: 17-10-16-00168Goofy (female)

American Shorthair Mix    Age: Senior

Health: Spayed, Vaccinations Current

** Ask About My Special Adoption Donation ** Hello again, Goofy (or sometimes Goofy Girl) here. It hasn't been too long since I first introduced myself after coming to Safe Place for Pets, and I'd like to tell everyone how much has changed since then! The biggest thing is that I'm not hiding anymore. I've moved from one of the upper story kennels down to one one the ground floor so that I can easily come and go as I wish. That is really great, because whenever one of the Safe Place volunteers comes into the room I come out to get some attention and petting. They say that I have blossomed into a sweet, friendly kitty. I was so frightened ... (Read More)when I first came to the Welcome Center that no one realized what a gem I am. They do now! I also like being able to come and go easily because sometimes I get a little overwhelmed by the the other cats and with my kennel on the ground floor it's a snap for me to scuttle back in and take a nap or have a snack. Finally, now that I'm not scared anymore , I can hop up to the top of the kennels whenever I want. It's about 7 feet off the ground and there are several kitty condos up there where I can snuggle up and watch everything that is going on around me. I never would have believed it when I first got here, but the Welcome Center is a pretty neat place to be, especially considering all the loving that I get. It sure beats being alone in my prior mom's house after they took her away! But I'd still rather be in a forever home where I can have that special someone - or a whole family - who I could love and would love me back. Won't you come by the Welcome Center and meet this Goofy Girl? I'm sure you won't regret it. All you have to do is email Safe Place for Pets at info@safeplacepets.org or call 359-0201 to make an appointment. I'd love to see you - and have you see me! Original Bio: Hello there. My name is Goofy, and I'm a 13-year-old female spayed Domestic Shorthair with claws. I'm a pretty little thing with my gray tabby markings separated by large patches of white with a white face and pink nose. I'm a quiet lady and love nothing more than to sit on my mom's lap or sleep next to her in bed. I'm quieter than ever right now because my whole life has been turned upside down and I'm scared and confused by it all. I knew that my prior mom was sick, but then she got really sick and couldn't get up. It was terrible, and before I knew what was happening, men with big boots and coats broke into my house and took Mom away! And then I was alone in the house for weeks. My mom's daughter, who loves me very much, came by to make sure that I had food and water, but I really didn't feel like eating or drinking. I was just too scared and stressed. They tell me that I'm underweight now, and let me tell you, stress and loneliness are no way for a lady to lose weight! Even now that I'm here at the Safe Place for Pets Welcome Center, I'm still frightened and hide under my prior mom's pillow. I like to be petted, but am too shy to come out to get it. I need a forever home where I can feel safe and loved again. I'm tired of being sad and scared. I told you that my name is Goofy, but I've had several names over the course of my life. My brother, who died a number of years ago, and I came to mom from a friend of hers who found us in a garage that was about to be torn down. She wanted good old-fashioned farm names for us, so she named us Harold and Agatha. Well, Harold eventually became Punk. I became Goose because when I was a kitten I used to like to pounce on my prior mom's daughter's feet, and she called my Silly Goose or Goosey Girl. I was Goose until my Mom went away and the lady from Safe Place for Pets made an appointment for me to go to the vet to get my shots (ycch!) and be checked out. When she made the appointment, the lady at the vet's office misunderstood what she said and wrote my name down as Goof. As it turns out, that was for the best, because there used to be another cat at the Welcome Center named Goose. She was there for a long time before she died of kidney disease, and everyone loved her very, very much. It would have been very hard for them to have a different cat with the same name. So, since Goof sounds a lot like Goose, it seemed like a great idea to call me that, or better yet, Goofy or Goofy Girl. I really don't care what you call me as long as you love me! Won't you please come to the Welcome Center to meet me? You can email Safe Place at info@safeplacepets.org or call (719) 359-0201 to make an appointment to come meet me. I hope you do because I really, really need someone all my own who will cherish me. (Less)

Domestic Cat    Age: Young Adult

Compatibility: Good w/ Most Cats, Good w/ Most Dogs, Good w/ Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Spayed

Hi, everyone! My name is Cece and I am a new arrival at the Safe Place for Pets Welcome Center, where cats who have lost their families to terminal illness live until new families adopt them. As you can see from my pictures, I am finding my new temporary home to be very comfortable, but I know that I will like a new furever home and family even more! Perhaps once you read about me, you will come by to visit. Let me know you will be stopping by and I will brew a pot of coffee for us to enjoy! Sadly, I lost my mom not too long ago to a terminal illness. She adopted me as a young kitten, but honestly, I think I still am a youngster since I ... (Read More)won't be 2 years old until my birthday in November. I am a very pretty, calico girl, who is spayed and indoor-only. Besides my mom, I lived with a cockapoo and a kitty brother, and I enjoyed their company very much. My mom's son tried to add me to his family, after my siblings were adopted by friends of my mom, but I could not adjust to his German shorthair pointer, a very mellow boy who really was always nice to me. Now I am embarrassed by my bad behavior toward him, but at the time I was just too fearful of his 'giant' size! In my new future home, it would be best if any dogs were no bigger than cockapoo size. Even though I like the company of small dogs and cats, nothing is better than the company of people. I love the attention from the cattery volunteers, and I come running when treats are included. I hope soon I will be able to do the same with you! Contact Safe Place for Pets on the web (safeplacepets.org), by phone (719-359-0201) or email them at info@safeplacepets.org to meet me. I hope to see you soon and I am confident that you won't be disappointed! (Less)

*Ask about my reduced adoption donation* Hi there! My name is Moxie, Sweet Pea. I am a petite black kitty with a few white hairs on my chest, side and back. I am around 2 years old, spade, and still have my claws. I have had one litter of kittens and was a very good first time, young mother. (Kiko is my daughter, in case you are looking for 2 cats.) I am somewhat reserved and will ask for attention when I need it. I am good with other cats and children but have never met a dog that I liked and used to chase them out of my yard. Contact Safe Place for Pets for a meet and greet.

PIease Read Before Adopting a Cat in Colorado
Cats can make good pets in Colorado if they match your IifestyIe. Domestic Cats have been intriguing companions for humans since ancient times. Worldwide, cats are even more popular than dogs as pets. Sadly, huge numbers of cats are in need of adoption and care. A cat owner who no longer wants the cat, or is no longer able to care for a cat, may drop the cat off at a shelter or simply abandon it. Overcrowding in shelters, along with too few adoptive families for the cats, leads to many wonderful pets having to be euthanized. Abandoned cats fend for themselves and breed in the wild, forming colonies of feral cats. Feral cats have such a difficult existence that they typically only live an average of two years, whereas domestic cats can live an average of twelve years with proper care. Organizations exist that can catch and tame feral kittens, and then place them in a home, but adult ferals can rarely be socialized to trust humans. Meanwhile, many prospective cat owners choose to purchase a kitten from a pet store or breeder, and may not know that even purebred cats and kittens are often available for adoption.

Once someone is ready for the responsibility of caring for a cat, adoption can be an incredibly rewarding decision. Adoption benefits cats, owners, and society alike. Adopting a cat is typically much less expensive than purchasing one. Shelters often have a wide selection of very sweet, friendly cats and kittens, including purebreds. Adoptive owners enjoy bonding with their pets, and have the extra satisfaction of knowing they have rescued a wonderful companion from a hard existence. Every cat adopted means one less cat has to be euthanized. Every kitten purchased new results in one less opportunity for adoption to take place. If you are ready for a pet cat, please consider adoption!

lnteresting Cat Trivia Low-Cost Colorado Spay & Neuter Clinics
All domestic cats are descended from African wild cats. Cats were considered divine in ancient Egypt and are depicted in hieroglyphs and found mummified in the tombs of Pharaohs. Cats were incredibly popular in ancient Rome; Rome may have been spared from plague outbreaks due to its huge population of feral cats keeping the rat population under control. Today, Rome has the largest number of feral cats of any city in the worldabout 300,000 felines!
